Miguel Trujillo skipped his high school reunion because he was embarrassed by not having his degree, or hopes of improving his career without it. He had enrolled in various colleges over the years, but never finished.
Thinking that now it could take years to earn his degree while working, he had almost given up when a coworker told him about Springfield College. “He said I could have my degree in 16 months.”
With trepidation, Miguel made an appointment with the admissions staff who created an academic plan for him that included a process for claiming a portfolio of life and work experience equivalent to college-level learning, and worth 30 credits.
Miguel started classes nervously, but committed himself. He thrived at working with students and teachers in small groups. “We became like a family, helping one another through encouragement and constructive criticism. My teachers were great, and gave me reinforcement to keep going.”
Miguel takes paternal pride in the effect that earning his degree has had upon his son Edgar. Edgar stepped up his own school performance and became an honor student.
Inspired by the School of Human Services mission, Miguel and Edgar together founded
FundsforStudents.org to provide academic help and life lessons to teenagers in their neighborhood. He also helps them with their applications for college admissions, financial aid, to find scholarships, and raise funds for college.
“It has been a great ride, and has gone by quickly,” Miguel says.
