As a veteran deployed twice to Iraq, Lisa Robertson missed more than two years of her children’s young lives during her National Guard service. “I went from basic training in October, to my first 14-month tour that January. That was a long 14 months.”
When she decided to use her military benefits and return to college, Lisa wasn’t willing to sacrifice more time away from her children than necessary. Nor was she able to give up working. “Springfield College was able to fit in with my complicated schedule. Classes met only two weekends a month. That was definitely a plus. I didn’t find that flexibility at other colleges.”
Lisa says that as an adult, she appreciated the support she received during the application process, and throughout her program. “The faculty and staff members were willing to work with me and my classmates to overcome the challenges that come with being adults. Whether we had issues with our children, our health, balancing our time, or with an academic issue, the staff members went above and beyond.”
Convenience wasn’t the only reason that she chose the Springfield College School of Human Services (SHS). As a veteran, Lisa identified with the commitment of SHS to community and public service. “This degree built upon my public service background. I can go anywhere with a degree in human services.”
Lisa is now enrolled in a master’s degree program, and is pleased that she was able to show her children that she could return to college as an adult. “We often study together. This has brought our family together.”
