Town Profile The village, just one
stop away from Sittingbourne by train, is also home to the Witch Hazel Nursery, containing one of only three National Plant Collections of Hamamelis (witch hazel). Members of the public can look around and purchase plants on designated open days, when a nominal entrance fee is donated to children’s charity Demelza, which has a hospice just down the road in Bobbing. Squarehead Studio, a continually expanding recording studio that works with both record labels and self- financed musicians, is based in the Newington countryside and has recorded local bands Story Books and Los Salvadores as well as British blues and folk duo Smoke Fairies.

Newington Festival is a combination of village fete and musical performance held on the first weekend after St George’s Day. Taking place in Newington Primary School’s playing field on Saturday, April 27, traditional entertainment such as a Punch and Judy Show and inter-pub tug-o- war challenge takes place from noon to 3pm and Kent bands perform all day until 9pm. Entry is £1 for adults, free for children.

Gardens, set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the North Downs, features an Edwardian rock garden, spring garden and other landscaped areas in the grounds of an imposing Victorian mansion. Also on the site is The Hawking Centre, which regularly appears on television, puts on falconry displays and lets visitors spend a day flying birds of prey.
