THE HERB GARDEN


Growing your own herbs is simple and will provide you with sumptuous fresh flavours to enjoy in your cooking. The best thing about herbs is they do not need a lot of space and a good crop can be obtained from the smallest of spaces. Many herbs are ideal for growing in mixed pots, or as on display here, in a hanging basket. The fresh smells outside your kitchen door will mean you never want to close the door!


How to make your own:


Simply line a basket with purpose-made liner or plastic sheeting. Make sure it has holes as herbs grow best in well drained conditions. Mix some general purpose compost with grit at a


ratio of five to one, and half fill the lined basket to allow room for your plants. You can usually buy hardened seedlings from most garden


centres pretty cheaply, and these will need planting out somewhere between mid-spring and mid-summer. If planting from seed, sow under cover in early spring and harden off once plants are approximately. 15cm tall. They can then be planted out. Choose plants that you enjoy cooking with, planting more upright


herbs in the centre and trailing varieties to the edge. It would be a good idea to avoid mint in these circumstances, as it can be invasive and will swamp your other plants. Water thoroughly and hang or position your basket in a warm but


sheltered site. Water at least once a day in the summer, and within 4-16 weeks you should have harvestable herbs!
