PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Make the Connection F
or starters, on behalf of the GHBA and myself, I would like to thank all of the sponsors
and attendees who made the 2013 Forecast Luncheon and 2013 Extravaganza the suc- cesses that they were. The turnout and support were impressive.
By GHBA President
HARRY MASTERSON, Cernus Development LLC
"I had not realized how many friends and contacts I have made through the
GHBA until addressing so many of them at one time. Any project imaginable
could be studied, designed, funded, entitled, supplied, constructed, marketed and sold within the network of people at the luncheon."
The number 900 can mean many things. While standing at a podium and looking out over the 900 people attending the GHBA Economic Forecast Luncheon, two meanings came to my mind. First, people are really interested in what is happening in the housing industry. Second, the GHBA network is huge.
Probably the biggest surprise to me—second to learning that I actually could find my voice—was how many people I knew in the audience. I had not realized how many friends and contacts I have made through the GHBA until addressing so many of them at one time. Any project imag- inable could be studied, designed, funded, en- titled, supplied, constructed, marketed and sold within the network of people at the luncheon.
I was impressed by how many people made a point of tracking me down after the event and the next day to tell me how their company needs to be more involved in the GHBA and that we can expect to see them at our upcoming events. I can assure you that it was not my speaking abilities that made them sign up. It was them walking into that room, seeing the GHBA network, and realizing they needed to be part of it.
The GHBA calendar is packed with meetings and events designed to provide networking opportunities and to keep our members in the know. In addition to the regularly scheduled council and committee meetings this month, the Chili & Salsa Cook-off (Feb. 8), the Million Dollar Circle Awards (Feb. 19), and Rally Day (Feb. 20) are always well attended events that are lots of fun and excellent opportunities for you to network within your industry.
Whether you’re a young professional or your picture has been on the board room wall for 20 years, I encourage you to browse the GHBA website and take a quick look at all the commit- tees, councils and events. It is flat out impressive and the reason we are a leading builders associa- tion in this nation.
One of my goals (and duties) is to make the rounds and visit with every council and com- mittee possible. There is so much going on at the GHBA that it will take me months to do so, and probably a new set of tires.
I encourage you to introduce yourself to me at our functions or as I am walking around the building. Let me know what is and is not working for you. The staff and your board work hard to make sure your dues are allocated to give you the most bang for your buck.
It’s our job to provide the benefits and network- ing opportunities our members want. But, it’s your job to make the connection.
