COUNCIL NEWS Opportunity Knocks… Just Open the Door


the stellar results of 2012, including a 27.4% increase in Houston homebuilding starts. Projections were favorable for the economy, employment, apartment occu- pancy, MLS supply and other trends. We are on the upswing! As I listened, I felt proud to be a member of the Houston homebuilding industry. Opportunity is knocking all around us; we just have to open the door!

Since SMC's main focus is sales and mar- keting, I’d like to share a “Top 10 List of Opportunities.”


1. Set goals. If you don’t have a plan, then life just happens. Work with a purpose. “A good plan is like a road map; it shows the final destination and usually the best way to get there.” —Judd, H. Stanley


2. Get involved. We have the amazing op- portunity to be a part of one of the largest SMCs in the country. Our organization is full of outstanding talent with much to offer. If you aren’t involved, you are missing out.


3. Education. Invest in yourself, and take your sales game to another level. Check out upcoming sales training seminars, or inquire about obtaining your Certified Sales Professional (CSP) or Master in Residential Marketing (MIRM) designations.

4. Invest in others. We have all had mentors who have invested in us throughout our careers and even in our personal lives, mak- ing an impact on who we are today. Invest in the growth of others by being a part of the GHBA and interacting with others in our same industry. Sharing is caring!


5. Give back. The GHBA not only supports our industry, but also gives back to others in the community who are not so fortunate. Volunteer for charity projects such as

Home-Aid, Adopt-a-Family and Project Playhouse, and gain the gratification of helping those in need.


6. Recognize hard work and results. Make sure your efforts get recognized by attending the Million Dollar Circle Awards on February 19 or the Houston’s Best PRISM Awards in the fall. The highest compliment to successful performance is sharing your successes with others.


7. Network. The SMC and GHBA offer a variety of networking opportunities to meet people who can help increase the effectiveness of your business, not to men- tion great friendships. Step out there and meet new people!


8. Commitments. The true meaning of com- mitment is keeping them! “Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the ‘right stuff’ to turn our dreams into reality.” —James Womack


9. Go the extra mile. Never underestimate the power of kind words and a smile. It only takes a little effort to go the extra mile. Perhaps it’s just arriving at work a few minutes early, taking extra time with a customer, or even sending a written note. Positivity and giving just a little extra sets you apart from others.


10. Have fun. We all get busy with work and life, but at the end of the day it’s all about having fun. Stop and smell the roses along the way and take the time to really enjoy what you are doing. Never underestimate how many results are created through good, downright FUN!


Opportunities are knocking on your door every day—in our everyday lives, our families, our companies, our industry, in the GHBA and within the SMC. I invite you to “open the door.”
