We often talk about how wonderful it is to be involved in the home building industry in Houston, Texas—particularly when compar- ing our economic environment to the rest of the United States. And it IS wonderful. However, have you ever drilled down to what's happening just north of Houston in Montgomery County? The numbers are incredible.

GREATER HOUSTON BUILDERS ASSOCIATION – BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE | HOUSTON BUILDER | FEBRUARY 2013 41

According to The Woodlands Area Economic Development Partnership, the unemploy- ment rate of the Greater Houston MSA is 6.3% (November 2012). The unemployment rate of Montgomery County is 5.7% and The Woodlands Area (The Woodlands, Shenandoah, and Oak Ridge North) is only 4.7%!

These low unemployment rates are a result of several economic factors, but the most notable are the proximity and easy access to

Houston and the influx of large corporations in and around Montgomery County—spe- cifically South Montgomery County.

For instance, if one looks at the Top 25 Non-Retail Employers, he would be hard pressed to find a more diverse group of service providers in a county that does not contain a major metropolitan city. Some of the largest non-retail employers are Anadarko (Oil & Gas), The Woodlands Memorial Hermann (Healthcare), Aon Hewitt (HR), Woodforest National Bank (Financial), Fox Network Center (Media), Sequoia Golf (Service), Maersk Line (Supply Chain), Lone Star College (Education), and the list goes on and on.

The most important result of this diversity is that it points to sustainable growth for Montgomery County. In local terms, we're very careful not to put all of our eggs in one basket.

If you would like to learn more about the unprecedented growth and the many busi- ness opportunities in Montgomery, I'd like to personally invite you to join us on the fourth Wednesday of every month at Landry's in The Woodlands. You'll be glad you did.
