and a strong response from the members to get involved by volunteering for one of the many standing committees that make up the council. If you have not already signed up for a committee, there is still room for you. Getting active on one of the standing committees is one of the best ways to maximize the benefits of your membership.
I would like to thank our January luncheon spon- sor, The Detering Company.
The RMC board of directors has been working hard during the last year to increase the public awareness of the council and the importance of hiring a professional remodeler for their construc- tion needs. In an effort to continue this effort this year, the council has retained the services of Susan Love Fitts Communications. Susan will prepare four additional press releases this year to promote the council, and these releases will reach the entire Houston marketing area so that all members will benefit.
In addition to increased marketing for the council, the board has also made a larger commitment to education by creating an in-house Remodeler Scholarship Program. The new program is designed to help remodeler members who are currently involved in working towards their certifications or for those remodelers who want to start working on their certifications. Once a quarter there will be a $250 scholarship awarded for this purpose. If you fall in this category and are interested in the scholarship, please contact

he RMC is off to a great start this year. There were 95 in attendance at the January luncheon
Kathy Johnson, the 2013 education chair, with your information for consideration.
Now that we have eased into the New Year, February will find us back in full swing. Our month- ly luncheon which will be held on February 12 at Lakeside Country Club, and the RMC will hold its first networking event on February 26, hosted by Bison, a Stock Building Supply Company.
In addition to these fun events, the 2013 Rally Day is scheduled for February 20. At Rally Day, builders from across the state of Texas convene in Austin at the Capitol and meet face to face with our representatives. The Texas Legislative Session only happens every two years, so this is our best occasion to meet with our representatives with a collective voice for our industry. I cannot overstate the importance of your participation in this event because of the length of time between sessions. If some bill gets passed that negatively affects our business, then it is a long time before we have the chance to get it fixed. It has happened in the past and can happen again if we do not do our part. This is a great time to meet those who represent you, and the day offers a host of networking op- portunities with fellow members.
I would like to challenge you to attend all of these events, and look up those members that you have not seen in a while and invite them to come out as well. Being active takes some time, but you will only get out of your membership what you put into it.
I look forward to seeing you there. 42 FEBRUARY 2013 | HOUSTON BUILDER | GREATER HOUSTON BUILDERS ASSOCIATION – BUILDING A BETTER FUTURE
