LETTERS OF THE LAW

Te article by Shmuel Bollen, “Te Most Recognizable Vehicle in North America” (page 42 in the October 2012 edition), was enlightening and true. Until I read this, I never gave a second thought to the placement or design of words on the back of a school bus and have to agree his theory has merit. Te departments of transportation in all states should read and perhaps

make changes that would improve on word placement. Great article. Eleonore A. Hendrickson, Supervisor of Tranportation Washingtonville (N.Y.) Central School District

I was in Shmuel Bollen’s presentation at the NASDPTS conference and I must admit I was fascinated. I don’t know for sure how many people would be positively influenced by the changes he was promoting to alter the messages on the rear of school buses. But I do know that it is not productive to say “Hey, blockhead. Stop for kids.” I only say that because we have been

saying that, and it has not been productive. Trent Gibson, State Director Oklahoma Department of Education

Editor’s Note: During Bollen’s presentation last fall at the NASDPTS Annual Conference in Memphis, Tenn., conversations between state and Supplier Council members centered on developing and collecting bench- marks and conducting a pilot project to help gauge the impact of changing current messaging for other motorists.

BRAVO!

Congrats, Charley Kennington on winning this year’s STN Leadership Award at NAPT (“Humble Texan,” page 36 in the November 2012 edition).

No one could be more deserving of this recognition. Pam McCurdy, President Texas Association for Pupil Transportation

Just finished reading Michelle Fisher’s “Tip of the Iceberg” article (page 56 in the October 2012 edition) and must pass along a tip of my hat to for your outstanding research, organization and writing. Great information at perfect

time of the year. Lionel Pinn, Director of Transportation Centralia/Chehalis (Wash.) Pupil Transportation Coop
