2:45 PM - 3:45 PM “POLITICS OF PARTNERSHIP” Management Presenter(s): Pete Meslin Description: Why do some partnerships between special education and transportation departments succeed while others fail? This session will provide a guide to navigating the intricate maze that exists in every partnership venture. There are numerous hidden traps that prevent many partnerships from succeeding. Using lessons from psychology, change facilitation, counseling, and business research attendees will learn how to avoid these traps. They’ll also learn the secrets to starting and growing partnerships in order to more effectively serve students with disabilities.


4:00 PM - 5:00 PM “DRIVER/ATTENDANT/DISPATCHER TEAM” Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Nancy Kessler Description: The roles and responsibilities of the Driver/Attendant/ Dispatcher Team are vital to providing a safe ride for the students we transport. During this session we will discuss and share the importance of proper training in accordance with federal law and best practices; key components for a successful working relationship; and communication concepts needed to listen and address the issues we face every day on the buses with regards to student management, emergency situations and proper reporting.


4:00 PM - 5:00 PM “EDUCATING FIRST/ EMERGENCY RESPONDERS” Head Start & Preschoolers Presenter(s): Russ Newbold Description: What your first responders need to know in a rescue situation? What do your drivers/monitors need to know in an emergency? This class will give an overview of what drivers, monitors, responders and supervisors will need to know in an emergency.


4:00 PM - 5:00 PM “GROWING QUALIFIED SPECIAL NEEDS TRANSPORTERS” Management Presenter(s): Debbie Rike, Lisa Hunt, Michelle Beasley Description: Not every trained bus driver is qualified to transport special needs children. What needs to happen in order for a general education bus driver to prepare for safely transporting our special cargo? This workshop will explore the training experiences inherent to developing special needs bus drivers.

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM “ATTITUDE ROADBLOCKS: “STAFF ATTITUDES ON THE EDGE”” Head Start & Preschoolers/Management Presenter(s): Kathleen Furneaux Description: Have an employee whose bad attitude is toxic to your operation? Why doesn’t my staff trust me? How did things get so bad? How can I start over - rebuild with better attitudes? This workshop looks at the fragile human dynamic of your operation and discusses how to turn a bad attitude around.


8:00 AM - 12:00 PM “MANAGING BEHAVIORS OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS” (SNT 105)* Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Marisa Weisinger, Nancy Kessler Description: This course takes an in-depth look at behavior management strategies that work with students of all ages. The emphasis is on best practices for supporting a safe school bus environment by utilizing effective behavior management strategies for a variety of different disability populations. In order to receive credit, participants will be required to complete a course-specific assignment.


9:15 AM - 10:15 AM “STUDENT DATA: WHY YOU NEED IT; HOW TO GET IT; WHAT TO DO WITH IT” Disabilities & Special Needs/Head Start & Preschoolers/Management Presenter(s): Pete Meslin Description: Business analysts preach that data is the lifeblood of a successful business. Yet transportation providers continually struggle to obtain and effectively use student data. This session will explore relevant laws and best practices surrounding the communication of special education student transportation information. We’ll also explore the numerous means to obtain, update, and transmit information including videos, behavior logs, databases, and other alternative data resources.


10:30 AM - 11:30 AM “CYBERBAITING”


Disabilities & Special Needs/Head Start & Preschoolers/Management Presenter(s): Debbie Rike, Michelle Beasley Description: As technology has developed and the use of smart phones has increased by students nationwide, cyberbaiting has become a new concern for school transportation officials around the country. Cyberbating occurs when students taunt their bus driver and capture their reactions on a cell phone to upload on the Internet. This session will focus on driver training and awareness.
