LEARNING, NOT COMPETITION Although the special needs Roadeo is, to some extent, a com-

petitive event by nature, the primary purpose is learning. Tis focus on learning instead of competition is emphasized throughout all Roadeo events. Contestants complete an open-book test prior to attending the

event. Te driver and attendant take the test as a team and are encouraged to research test questions by using the resource guide included with their test.

PRE-CHECK

Tis procedure is conducted on a lift-equipped bus, and all special needs items must be checked. Te driver and attendant can conduct the pre-check as a team, or the driver alone can perform the procedure.

WHEELCHAIR LOADING AND SECUREMENT

Te driver and attendant load and secure a wheelchair with a student on board. Tey will be judged on items such as making sure one staff member has a hand on the wheelchair at all times it’s on the lift, displays sensitivity towards the student and selects the proper securement points on the wheelchair.

CAR SEAT SECUREMENT Tis event focuses on the importance of the placement and se-

curement of the car seat and the student. Te driving course is what most resembles the traditional Roadeo, and will include Railroad Crossing, Serpentine and a Rear Alley Dock.

STUDENT MANAGEMENT During the driving course, drivers and attendants simultaneously

face a “challenging student passengers” scenario. Tey’re graded on how effectively they handle students with emotional disabilities as the students “act out” on the bus.

EMERGENCY EVACUATION

Te driver and attendant are given ahead of time a list of students with their disability descriptions that will be on board their bus during the event. Te driver and attendant are presented with an emergency scenario and are graded on their real-time, hands-on response to the emergency. 
