BUS CONTRACTOR FIRST STUDENT SHARES WINTER DRIVING TIPS

THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN ON THE SCHOOL BUS DEPENDS NOT ONLY ON THE BUS DRIVER BUT ALSO ON OTHER MOTORISTS. AS WINTER WEATHER IMPACTS ROAD CONDITIONS, FIRST STUDENT OFFERS THE FOLLOWING SAFETY REMINDERS TO MOTORISTS AND PARENTS:

PARENTS •

Leave early to get to the bus stop. When roads and walkways are slippery, rushing to catch the bus or driving faster can have dangerous results. Children need extra time to get to the bus stop in cold, windy or snowy conditions.

• Make sure your children are protected and warm — but also aware. When bundling up your child with heavy coats, hats and scarves, be sure he or she still has an adequate line of sight and can hear traffic and other noises.

• Pay attention to weather alerts and school messages. During hectic mornings, parents must be aware of weather alerts and school cancellations, early dismissals and/or bus route changes. Also make sure the school has your current contact information and check school websites during inclement weather.

MOTORISTS • Allow extra time to travel in inclement weather. Drivers who give themselves extra time to get to their destination help to ensure a safe speed for road conditions and an adequate following distance.

• Follow the law when sharing the road with school buses. In all 50 states, it is illegal to pass a school bus that has its stop arm out and red lights flashing. Red lights indicate students are getting on or off. Motorists should proceed with caution.

• Properly maintain your vehicle. Make sure wiper blades, tires, battery and defroster are in good working condition. Keep the vehicle’s gas tank full and check window washer fluid levels.
