2:15 PM - 3:15 PM “POSTURAL SUPPORTS FOR WHEELCHAIR PASSENGERS: RESEARCH AND RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT SAFE TRANSPORT” Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Sue Shutrump, Miriam Manary, Charley Kennington, Dianna Gates Description: Students who use wheelchairs utilize a variety of postural supports and devices, which can promote or in some cases interfere with safe seating and vehicle occupant restraints. We will review some of the more common types of postural support devices and the concerns for safe travel identified through research. Effective strategies to utilize when ordering, fitting, and using postural supports which enhance transportation safety of these devices will be the focus of this session.

2:15 PM - 3:15 PM “CONFLICT: WHAT CONFLICT? THE POWER OF EFFECTIVE PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH CONFLICT RESOLUTION” Management Presenter(s): Mark Hinson, Mark Deschaine Description: This session will assist you in identifying conflict in the workplace and strategies for resolution. Recognizing and understanding personality traits, communication styles and mental health issues are important considerations. You will come away with confidence to address conflict situations and realize the power of effective workplace relationships.


3:30 PM - 4:30 PM “OT/PT/TRANSPORTER FORUM: SOLVE YOUR MOST PERPLEXING CASES (INTERACTIVE SESSION)” Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Sue Shutrump, Charley Kennington, Miriam Manary, Dianna Gates Description: Bring your most perplexing cases for discussion during this session and take advantage of the knowledge present at this conference. Those with expertise in transportation, safety engineering, and physical/ occupational therapy will lead the discussion, but there will be great experience among attendees as well.


3:30 PM - 4:30 PM “RIDERSHIP PRACTICES FOR HEAD START STUDENTS: “TEACHING SAFE RIDING FUNDAMENTALS TO TODDLERS”” Head Start & Preschoolers Presenter(s): Kathleen Furneaux Description: Teaching safe ridership to students can sometimes be challenging, but what happens when the perpetrators are 3 and 4 years old? How much can they absorb, comprehend and remember? What are effective techniques for teaching safe riding fundamentals to toddlers? This workshop will address these questions and many more regarding establishing and communicating ridership practices to Head Start children.


3:30 PM - 4:30 PM “DOWN THE ROAD” Management Presenter(s): Alex Robinson, Jay Thurber Description: As managers and leaders in school transportation, we always have to have our “eyes on the road “: what’s coming up ahead of us in the direction we’re traveling. We also need to be mindful of current road conditions and what could inhibit our “ride” along the way. This session will focus on our school transportation path toward the future, new highlights and federal challenges as well as innovative areas where our paths and road map quickly change. We will take a look at where we’ve been and address school transportation and education highlights “down the road.”

9:00 AM - 10:00 AM “IT’S NOT ABOUT “MY WAY:” COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS & BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS” (SNT 106)* General Session Presenter(s): Pete Meslin, Cindy Konomos, Dianna Gates, Lisa Hunt Description: Parents of students with special needs have faced significant adversity during their children’s short lives. How do we hear their concerns and mesh them with our need to streamline services through tightened budgets? Who needs to be at the table and how do we reach compromise that everyone can live with?


10:15 AM - 11:15 AM “IEP: TRANSPORTATION AT THE TABLE” Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Nancy Kessler, Cindy Konomos, Dianna Gates, Description: IEP meetings can be simple or very complex. What is the team looking for from you? What do you need from them? What can you gain from being at the table? This session will discuss how to put procedures in place to insure that your interests are represented in the IEP process before and after the meeting.
