There are numerous methods to help reduce the “encroachment.” These opportunities to be more efficient are abundant but not always obvious. This session will present a compendium of cost savings ideas - some of which you’ve probably never considered.
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM “Getting Started in Transporting Students Who Use Wheelchairs” Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Sue Shutrump Description: This session will discuss basic principles of safe transport of wheelchair passengers including safe boarding, use of tiedowns and restraint systems and securement of accessory equipment. Procedural considerations for dealing with medical issues, wheelchair components, and challenging wheelchair types will be reviewed.

We’ll examine components of effective communication strategies to “make it happen” as it should.

With shorter administration times and available training for non-medical personnel, many school transporters are being expected to administer these powerful drugs. Join us for an interactive discussion on changing legislation and best practice procedures, which meet the needs of these challenging passengers.
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM “BABIES ON THE BUS” Head Start & Preschoolers Presenter(s): Susan Hunt Description: As a school bus transporter, you may be asked to transport babies on a school bus. How are you going to do this? This workshop will give you some tools and a better understanding of their needs. Babies on school buses are very different from older children and they have different needs and abilities.
1:30 PM - 2:30 PM “AGING FLEETS” Management Presenter(s): Brian Weisinger, John Benish, NASDPTS Rep. Description: Most districts are feeling the results of budget cuts, stretched Vehicle Replacement Programs, and aging equipment. How do we continue to offer the safest and most effective service to our special needs students with these constraints?
2:45 PM - 3:45 PM “PLANNING FOR WHAT LIES BENEATH THE SURFACE” Disabilities & Special Needs Presenter(s): Sue Shutrump Description: Meeting the special needs of school bus passengers can be a complex and difficult task but even more so when those needs are not readily apparent to transportation staff. Least restrictive transportation scenarios for students with non-obvious disabilities often include transport on traditional routes. The importance of team planning guided by effective documentation in meeting the special needs of passengers in these inclusive environments will be stressed. What are some of these disabilities? What kinds of modifications need to be made? Come and find out as we venture beneath the surface!
2:45 PM - 3:45 PM “MOBILE LEARNING - EXTENDING THE CLASSROOM TO THE BUS: “MAXIMIZING THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE TO AND FROM SCHOOL”” Head Start & Preschoolers Presenter(s): Michelle Saavedra, Kathleen Furneaux Description: The school bus is not always thought of as the best learning environment. But why not maximize the educational experience to and from school? Keeping their minds busy may enhance the ride, decrease behavior issues and bring the bus ride into a new light. This workshop will explore option, activities and techniques for extending the classroom onto the school bus.
