JANUARY 2013 THE RIDER /7 A Royal Demo Of Saddle Seat Equitation

In the summer of 2012, Allan Ehrlick, President of the Ontario Equestrian Federation approached Mary Ruth Moore to see if she would be interested in facilitating a clinic on Saddle Seat riding at the Royal Winter Fair. It was to be one of the features of the Spirit Of The Horse. Mary Ruth asked me if I would be interested in assisting her and I naturally agreed, who can resist going to the Royal!

The dates were set for November 5 & 6th and we would have two time slots of 30 minutes each to present a short introducto- ry clinic on Saddle Seat riding. We asked Kyla Vendrig and Lexi Dickerman if they would be our riders for the clinic and they and their moms happily agreed. Arrangements were set for shipping down bright early Mon- day morning; our first demo was to be at lunch time and the 2nd demo ran at 4:00 pm. This allowed plenty of time to groom the horses and be dressed. Mary Ruth and I shared duties of “instructing” while the other kept an eye open for safety reasons. It is a small ring with a lot of people surrounding you, loud speakers going constantly and other horses neighing, it’s a busy place and takes a special horse to absorb it all and not be adversely affected. Kyla and Lexi’s horses proved to be perfect under this situation and was one of the main reasons they were chosen. We were confident they would handle all the business of the Spirit Ring.

Kyla and Lexi demonstrated the basics of Saddle Seat riding and also showed higher levels with their pattern work; Lexi piloted her Saddlebred gelding “Melman” around the ring and did some amazing serpentines too which the crowd applauded. Kyla and her Morgan gelding “Merlin” also wowed the crowd with their canter transitions and their trot/canter serpentine work. We had some great feedback from the spectators and other par- ticipants of the Spirit Ring which made it very rewarding for us. It was our goal to show Saddle Seat as a beautiful sport and we feel we achieved that goal.
