Happy New Year! Hello and welcome to 2013. Hopefully everyone had a great holiday season and was able to spend some time with family. The new year always brings with it a promise of new beginnings and new dreams. But we will get back to that in a minute. I’d like to intro- duce myself to those of you that don’t know me and send out a warm hello to those I haven’t seen in a while. If we haven’t met before, let me tell you a bit about myself…. We got our first horse when I was three and my sister and I were hooked. Within a year of having ‘Amigo’ mom and dad thought it would be fun to take us to our first horse show. A lovely gentleman by the name of Peter Emick was the judge that day and when we went into the line- up in our Leadline class he asked me how long I had been riding. According to my mom my response was ’All my life!’ Little did my parents know they had start- ed my sister and I on a life- long passion for showing horses.

As children, some of our fondest memories were spent with our two ponies Vicky and Pippin showing at Dry Lake Saddle Club. When we moved up to horses we continued show- ing at local clubs and also decided to try our luck on the WHAO and OQHA cir- cuits. As you can imagine, this involved a lot of dedi- cation not only from us but from our parents as well. See, the problem is you

can’t just hitch a ride to the horse shows and expect everything to go well. It’s not just the horse shows that require dedication, it is the long hours of driving back and forth to riding lessons, the racing from fabric store to fabric store to find THE PERFECT shade of blue for that show shirt, the tack shops, feed mills, the lack of sleep due to early morning horse shows, not to mention the costs of these endeavours. And we haven’t even talked about all the daily tasks they all had to finish, just so we could have the opportu- nity to own our dear horses. We developed a strong bond between our horses and ourselves and it wasn’t due to the ribbons we received at the shows, it was due to the dedication that we had. When we were at a horse show it was always a gathering of friends, new and old. We had triumphs and defeats, successes and failures, but with the strong support and dedication our parents gave us we all had a great time. We were part of a gen- eration when the youth classes outnumbered the open classes and the hardest competition was usually your best friend. Because of showing, we learned humility, respect, compas- sion and responsibility. The friends we made through showing are life- long, dedicated individuals who share the same inter- ests and qualities that we do. The love and bond that we developed with our

horses is due to the dedica- tion of our parents.
In the past few years, we have seen a decrease in the numbers at our WHAO shows, which seems to be a trend with many local asso- ciations and we have been trying to figure out the cause of this. Is it the cost of fuel? The cost of owning a horse? The vehicles required to go to those shows? The cost of train- ing the horse? The cost of showing itself? The classes offered? Are people losing interest? No matter how hard we try, we cannot determine the reason why there are less entries at the shows than there were in the past. Unfortunately we cannot decrease the cost of fuel, or owning a horse, or any of the other costs asso- ciated with our beloved past time but we can encourage new and old members to come out and try a few new classes. We made the deci- sion at our Annual General Meeting that we would remove Youth Hunter Under Saddle and Youth Dash for Cash from our mandatory classes and would exchange them for two classes that might encourage a few new entries. We will now be offering 13 & over Walk Jog and 13 & over Walk Jog Horsemanship at each of our shows. You may ask why we would take out classes that are usually stan- dard at most shows. Well we have seen a decrease in the entries for these youth classes in the past few years and if there are youth that

want to show they can still enter the corresponding open class. We would like to give an opportunity to those who may or may not have previous show experi- ence to make their own appearance in the show ring. This is an excellent opportunity for those won- derful parents with all the dedication to now focus on their own show career, or maybe newcomers in the show ring altogether. These two classes will be offered as closed classes meaning an entrant will not be able to enter any class other than Showmanship or Halter if offered. Maybe this new beginning will be the start of a new dream for some of our members. We would like to encourage our members to enter these new classes, or maybe bring out a new member to enter? We would love to see some new faces in the ring and hope- fully this will give them a comfortable way to start. We hope that we can help you and your family start this new year with a new dream, maybe enter a new class, show a new horse, encourage a family member to fulfill their dream of showing. This is our new year’s resolution. I would like to have the opportunity to say hello to each of our members, so please come say hello the next time we meet. Last but not least, I would encourage you to say hello to the people around you at the shows you go to. You never know the friendships
