20/ JANUARY 2013 THE RIDER Teen Ranch Hosts 37 Years Of AQHA Shows By Corrie Ensom

Teen Ranch says goodbye to hosting it’s annual AQHA horse show. It has become one of the longest running shows in Ontario, as well as one of the favourite host sites of

the competitors.

Back in 1975, styles may have been a little dif- ferent, but the beauty, diversity and discipline of the Quarter Horse was still there. Kelly Smith attend- ed the Teen Ranch shows

back in the 70’s and has some funny memories of the styles worn back then. In the english classes, Kelly showed in a brown helmet and boots, had a lovely beige jacket with brown velvet collar and a flower on the lapel.

and Western flat classes, Working Hunter, Barrels and Poles, Calf Roping, Reining, Pleasure Driving and more!

Even the women in those days wore a men’s shirt and tie. In the west- ern classes, Kelly remem- bers the riders not wearing chaps, but having pant clips to hold their pants down. She had western hats in all colours including pink, red and yellow. Every western saddle had coloured pompoms to match the rider’s outfit. In the Halter classes, com- petitors tucked their pants in to show off their long boots.

Back in those early days, all classes were held on one day, often running the shows in the dark. The classes were so large that everyone lined their trucks up to get enough headlights to illuminate the ring. Classes over the years included Halter, English

There were several things that made the Teen Ranch Quarter Horse Show unique from the others. For may years, Teen Ranch hosted the first show of the season. Each year, drivers were handed a garbage bag to keep things neat by a helpful and friendly staff member, usually with some sort of international accent. There are Teen Ranch’s all over the world, so often the staff travel between to volunteer. Also at each Teen Ranch show was a chapel, held on the Sunday. All rings would be closed and com- petitors would come sit on the hill, or even at their trailers, to listen to the speaker and musical guests. Lindsay Grice says this was a very unique and nice pause to have in the hectic horse show schedule. It has been a privilege to be involved with OQHA and AQHA for so many years and to work with such amazing people as Ken McLellan, Sue & Cheryl Nye, Lynn & Tom Bradt, Lee Jackson and Valerie Love. Even the trainers and riders were kind enough to chip in to make the shows amazing. Lindsay Grice, Jodi Mal- lette, Sherry Newbigging... hank you for your help and support over the years! Teen Ranch is located in the beautiful Caledon Hills. It is a Christian Sports Camp for kids 8-18 through the summer months and a retreat centre and sports training camp facility from September to June. Teen Ranch also hosts Hunter Jumper schooling shows each year,
