30/ JANUARY 2013 THE RIDER Eric Lamaze Makes Appearance at Geneva Horse Show

Geneva, Switzerland – Canada’s Eric Lamaze made his first competition appearance in three months at the CSI5*-W Geneva International Horse Show, but in the capacity of com- mentator, not competitor. Lamaze, the 2008 Olympic Show Jumping Champion and former number one in the Rolex Rider Rankings, began a short hiatus from competi- tion following the CSIO5* Spruce Meadows “Mas- ters” tournament in Cal- gary, Canada, in Septem- ber. While Lamaze will not return to competition until the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida, he travelled to Geneva to sup- port the competition, held December 6 to 9, and its sponsor, Rolex.

of the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final, Lamaze provided the large audience with a course description, giving them an insider’s look at the challenges and ques- tions posed by Swiss course designer Rolf Ludi in the Palexpo Arena. Lamaze also conducted a course assessment for the media prior to the event on behalf of Rolex.

On Sunday, Lamaze provided television com- mentary of the Rolex World Cup Grand Prix, the sixth leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping 2012/2013 Western Euro- pean League, for French broadcast outlet, Equidia. It is a sideline Lamaze has come to enjoy, having commentated for other international show jumping events, including calling the $1 million CN Interna-

The trip to Geneva also gave Lamaze an opportunity to watch Pilar Cordon of Spain compete with Coriana van Klapscheut, the horse that carried him to second place in the 2011 edition of the Rolex IJRC Top 10 Final. Cordon has shown the 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by Artisan Farms in the past when Lamaze has had schedul- ing conflicts, and took over the ride for the European indoor circuit when Lamaze announced his break. “It was really fun to be there, and I was happy to be able to do a lot for the show,” said Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, noting that Geneva is one of his favourite shows on the European circuit. “It was nice to see all my friends from Rolex and from the European circuit, and being in Geneva also gave me a chance to watch Coriana being ridden by Pilar. I was very pleased with how the horse is jumping.”

Lamaze continued, “I’m back riding again myself, and looking for- ward to the 2013 season where we’ll concentrate on making up a new string of young horses.”

Lamaze will be riding two new horses, Rosana du Park, a 2005 bay selle francais mare (Kannan x Qui- nine de Livoye) and Big Smile, a 2006 grey Westphalian mare (Car- tano x Hors de la Loi II). Both hors- es were purchased by the Ziegler family’s Artisan Farms and arrived in Wellington, Florida, in mid- November.

Lamaze, who divides his time between Belgium and Florida, will return to competition at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festi- val running January 9 through March 31 in Wellington, Florida. Despite having not competed for the past three months, Lamaze is still ranked among the top 30 in the cur- rent Rolex Riders Rankings.

Club Members Receive Distinguished Volunteer Service Award

Where would any organi- zation be if their members did not volunteer unselfishly day in and day out? They devote countless hours, they drive thou- sands of miles, they spend more money than they want to keep track of, all to benefit the club. Large organizations such as Ontario Equestrian Federa- tion and Arabian Horse Associ- ation have instituted programs to honour distinguished volun- teers, and Arabian Horse Asso- ciation of Eastern Canada (AHAEC) is extremely grateful these programs exist. Each year we are able to nominate our club members because one or two went above and beyond. To have this opportunity to recog- nize their contributions amongst their peers is a worthwhile achievement.

OEF’s “People Make A Difference Award” is one of the most highly regarded awards presented annually. AHAEC’s recipient for 2012 is Jean Dins- more, long-time owner and breeder of Arabian horses, and she is the epitome of what this award is about. Many decades ago Jean developed and

launched the Arabian Royal Red Amateur Bonanza (ARRAB) program. Much like a maturity exhibitors nominate their horses each year to compete in speci- fied classes as the Royal Red Hunter Pleasure, Royal Red Western Pleasure, Royal Red Native Costume, etc. Based on nomination fees, sponsorships and donations the Top Five win- ners in each class split the “pot” and in 2012 each Top Five placement earned one of the highest paybacks ever recorded! Without Jean’s devotion to manage and promote the ARRAB program our exhibitors would not have the incredible opportunity to show in program- specific classes, to receive mer- chandise and win a sizeable payback! From all of the win- ners and competitors since the inception of the ARRAB pro- gram—thank you Jean!

The Arabian Horse Associ- ation (based in Denver) also offers a volunteer recognition program, and these were recent- ly announced at their annual convention. AHAEC members Tara Porter and Jane Whitwell were presented with the Region-

al Level Volunteer Service Award, and Club Level Volun- teer Service Awards were awarded to Cyndi Tryon and Carol Stuart. Tara Porter has keen knowledge in IT, thereby handles the website develop- ment and maintenance for AHAEC and Region 18, and combined with her flare for fundraising her efforts have had a huge impact on the organiza- tions’ success.

Since joining the club in 1974, Jane Whitwell has served on AHAEC’s Board of Direc- tors multiple times. Recently she has organized AHAEC`s promotion booth at OEF`s “Toronto Horse Day” and “Spir- it of the Horse” at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and created the “Arabian Horse Activity Book” for distribution to teachers, ECE`s, Pony Clubs, therapy riding programs and children.

Cyndi Tryon has worked tirelessly on fundraising and sponsorships for both AHAEC and Region 18, culminating in a very successful raffle for an ATV in 2012. She is currently serving her first term as an

Coriana van Klapscheut was also Lamaze’s mount for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara (MEX), before placing second in the €200,000 Rolex Top 10 Final held at the 2011 CSI5* Paris Gucci Masters in France. Lamaze and Coriana van Klapscheut also competed at the 2012 World Cup Final in ‘s-Hertogenbocsh (NED), placing 11th overall.

AHAEC Director and Club Sec- retary. We must emphasize Cyndi has been a wonderful mentor to her daughter, as Aysha served on AHAEC`s Youth Board and has been an enthusiastic and competent tick- et seller for all fundraising pro- jects. It is gratifying to see the involvement from one genera- tion to the next—they are both incredible role models!

Being involved with AHAEC & Region 18 for many years Carol Stuart thoroughly enjoys working the in-gate. She arrives early, stays late, is extremely courteous to exhibitors & officials, and encourages other members & friends to volunteer at our shows.

An organization doesn`t exist without the commitment and passion of their volunteers. Thank you one and all!

While the sale of Coriana closes a chapter from the past, we are looking forward to opening a new chapter with young horses.”

“I am very pleased that Coriana is going to Pilar,” said Lamaze, noting that Cordon has rid- den the horse in the past when he has had scheduling conflicts. “She has ridden the horse numerous times and has done a good job with her. It was a good match from the time she first rode her.” a When Lamaze announced that he was taking a short hiatus from the sport in September, he handed Coriana’s reins over to Cordon for the indoor circuit. The match proved so successful that Cordon opted to buy the mare.

“Having Coriana is going to be very helpful to Pilar; she is such a competitive horse in every type of class, and will help Pilar get ahead in the world rankings,” said Lamaze. “The addition of Coriana will also help relieve the pressure on Pilar’s current string, sharing the work with her main horses. We couldn’t be happier with where she is going.”

Lamaze continued, “Having competed around the world and been a great competitor, Coriana played a huge role in achieving my num- ber one ranking in the Rolex Rider Rankings.

Artisan Farms recently purchased Rosana du Park, a 2005 bay selle francais mare (Kannan x Quinine de Livoye) and Big Smile, a 2006 grey Westphalian mare (Cartano x Hors de la Loi II) for Lamaze to campaign. Both horses have suc- cessfully competed in FEI-sanctioned young horse competitions in Europe. Purchased from Gilbert De Roock of Belgium, Rosana du Park and Big Smile are currently in Lamaze’s training program in Wellington, FL.

“It was difficult, but we made the decision to sell Coriana and invest in some young horses and rebuild a top string,” explained Lamaze. “I am especially happy that she is going to Pilar as I am working closely with her partner and coach, Gilbert De Roock in Belgium, on finding new horses and rebuilding my string.”

Lamaze plans to return to competition at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival running January 9 through March 31 in Welling- ton, FL.

Based in Vrasene, Belgium, and Wellington, Florida, Artisan Farms supports Olympian Tiffany Foster as well as Lamaze. Andy Ziegler, who owns Artisan Farms with his wife, Carlene, also competes, as does their daughter, Caitlin, 17. Artisan Farms is the presenting sponsor of the Young Riders Grand Prix Series, now in its third year, at the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestri- an Festival.
