In Shackleton’s Footsteps
This all-encompassing voyage covers the wildlife havens of the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands, as well as heading deep into the continent to the Weddell Sea. You’ll enter a world inhabited by king penguins, the second tallest in the world, elephant seals and killer whales (orcas), plus various other penguin species. You’re also in Shackleton’s domain, and will see where this pioneering explorer’s crew survived for four months in the harsh Antarctic winter.
Voyage itinerary
Day 1 Board the Polar Pioneer and meet your fellow explorers. Days 2 to 3 As you cross the Drake Passage, catch your fi rst glimpses of polar landscapes; the outer decks and bridge offer great vantage points for photography and wildlife-viewing.
Days 4 to 6 Sail through the Antarctic Sound into the Weddell Sea, taking your fi rst steps on the Antarctic continent. En route, watch for whales, seals and visit penguin rookeries.
Days 7 to 8 Go ashore Elephant Island, home to Shackleton’s men for four months, and then follow in their wake to the mountainous South Orkney Islands.
Days 9 to 13 Cross the Scotia Sea to South Georgia, home to the world’s largest penguin rookeries, including the second tallest penguins in the world, king penguins. You’ll also stand amid beaches of elephant and fur seals and beneath albatrosses as they circle the skies.
Days 14 to 16 Enjoy lectures en route to the Falkland Islands.
Days 17 to 18 Explore the Falkland Islands, including the Stanley, the capital, and Sea Lion Island. The Falklands are renowned for their prolifi c birdlife, including magellanic and rockhopper penguins.
Day 19 Return to Ushuaia. Day 20 Disembark in Ushuaia in the morning.
