Antarctica is a land of abundant, astonishing wildlife, vast and magnificent landscapes, and quite remarkable tales of its early pioneer explorers.


Although much larger than Europe, Antarctica is inhabited only by small temporary groups of research scientists. The icy landscapes are breathtaking: mountain peaks rise to nearly fi ve thousand metres from an ice-sheet more than one kilometre thick, while glaciers tumble towards the frozen sea, calving spectacular blue icebergs.


Equally impressive is the wildlife: for a few brief weeks each summer vast colonies of penguins, seals, seabirds and whales feed and breed here, giving rise to a frenzy of noise and activity.
