Antarctica - Antarctica - Argentina
The Antarctic Peninsula and Weddell Sea
Journey deep into Antarctica to the home of majestic emperor penguins... The Weddell Sea boasts huge tabular icebergs, pristine seas and an uncompromising environment reserved only for the most intrepid of polar adventurers. In a land famously travelled by polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, see the world’s tallest penguins, the emperors, and observe seals, whales and birds at close quarters.
Voyage itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Ushuaia and enjoy an evening at leisure. Day 2 Board your ship, the M/S Expedition, in readiness for your departure to the depths of Antarctica and a land of ice.
Days 3 to 4 Cross the infamous Drake Passage, where expedition staff will begin their lectures on the area’s wildlife, history and environment.
Days 5 to 12 First stop on your Antarctic journey is the South Shetland Islands, before crossing to the peninsula’s lesser-visited eastern side, the Weddell Sea. Named after British explorer James Weddell who fi rst visited in 1822, this area needs skilful navigation due to the large amounts of sea ice. Over the next eight days, we have ample time to explore and make landings, which also provides great opportunities for photographs. The area has important historical signifi cance as it was here that Shackleton and his crew abandoned his ship, the Endurance. An explorers’ hut belonging to a Swedish expedition still stands at Snow Hill. Today, polar travellers come to observe the world’s tallest penguin, the emperor, which can be seen on ice fl oes among the clear waters of the Weddell Sea.
Days 13 to 14 Return across the Drake Passage to Ushuaia. Day 15 Disembark in Ushuaia in the morning.
