» Editor’s Note
Exercise Is Medicine in Canada FBC is a strong supporter of business ventures that link health
and fitness. We see a natural fit between the consumer demand for preventive medicine and the resources offered by the club industry in Canada. In past issues, we’ve published articles from the Exercise Is

Medicine (EIM) group within the ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine). Of particular note is the work of Dr. Stephen Blair whose research on the health benefits of exercise continue to be of great value. Recently, we’ve noted some positive developments in Canada on the Exercise Is Medicine front. A new initiative, Exercise
Is Medicine Canada (EIMC) was launched in October at the annual meeting of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (see page 9). In early November, a new public/private collaboration between GoodLife Fitness and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital was announced. GoodLife founder and CEO David Patchell-Evans provided a $5 million donation to the Centre to expand its facilities and research in cardiovascular rehabilitation medicine. This expansion, in time, will include GoodLife Fitness clubs and cardiac clinics across Canada. See
www.fitnet.ca and our upcoming January 2013 issue for additional details. There are many clubs across Canada with programs that connect healthcare
professionals and fitness professionals, including the Re-Fit Centre in Winnipeg and World Health Clubs in Edmonton and Calgary. In this issue, we interview Dr. Scott Wilson, chairman and CEO of Physiomed Health, an organization that establishes its clinics within existing fitness clubs. See “Putting the ‘Health’ in Health and Fitness” on page 20. Future FBC issues will continue to publicize the growing links between the fitness industry and the healthcare profession. We welcome your comments and suggestions.
