Enhanced technology is the fu-

ture of cardio equipment, says Brian Furlong, president of Advantage Fitness Sales Inc. in Markham, Ont. “People don’t want to leave their phones and iPads in their gym bags,” he says. “They want to check their email, watch a movie or work out with an internet-based program.” According to Furlong, the latest

equipment entering the market has large 19” screens that users swipe with their fingers to access the internet

or (if they’ve connected their smart- phones or tablets) to view personal information. “It’s phenomenal,” says Furlong,

who got a sneak peak at some of the newest offerings earlier this year. The new technology also of-

fers advantages for club ad- ministrators. When a piece of equipment breaks down, the club manager and repair technician re- ceives detailed error messages that are sent directly to their computers. They can also track the mileage of their cardio equipment from their com- puters instead of visiting each piece individually.
