Family/Personal I live in central Charlotte with my hus- band, Manley, and our two children. I still enjoy playing tennis and volleyball on several community teams, and es- pecially appreciate time spent camping, hiking, and biking with my family. My husband and I have hiked to the sum- mit of Mt. Ranier and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
How did you get started in the politics? I was deeply concerned about the direc- tion of education in our community and I first ran for county commission to make sure that our teachers and families had a strong voice representing them.
How has your prior career experiences prepared you for your journey in your career? Working as a diplomat helped me gain skills in communicating with

people of diverse cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. I also learned to speak fluent Spanish. As a former international banker with First Union I am comfortable with complex budgets and balance sheets and this experience has helped me in the decision making process for balancing the county budget as well as maintaining Mecklenburg Coun- ty’s triple A bond rating. My banking experience has also helped me un- derstand the needs and challenges of businesses and my experience run- ning a non-profit taught me about leveraging budgets and running an operation at minimal cost.

I truly believe that when God closes a door, she opens a window. The challenge is in keeping
