History isn’t boring in Egypt. The temples, tombs and golden treasures are so well preserved it feels as if you’re travelling through a living museum. The activities are great too: you can ride camels and

donkeys, sail feluccas, swim every day, snorkel in the aquarium-like waters of the Red Sea or even take a balloon fl ight.

What

Wherever you go in Egypt you’ll fi nd donkeys and camels. Since ancient times they’ve been at the heart of life and you still see them everywhere. But that’s not all: look out for water-buffaloes in the fi elds with their attendant egrets, darting kingfi shers on the Nile and most spectacular of all the amazing technicolour world of fi sh and corals in the Red Sea.

ANIMALS are you likely to see?

Indiana Jones, James Bond and even Tintin all found adventure in Egypt and you’ll soon see why! With bustling souks, empty deserts and mysterious monuments to explore, every day feels like an adventure. You could climb into the heart of an ancient pyramid, run down a giant sand dune, camel trek Lawrence-of-Arabia-style through the desert or camp wild on the edge of the Nile.

For something a bit different, try sleeping on a traditional felucca. After a day sailing down the Nile and an evening round the campfi re with desert stars overhead, you’ll fall asleep to the gentle rocking motion of the felucca moored up on the riverbank. Bliss.

You can get familiar, western-style food all over Egypt (nowadays even the inscrutable Sphinx gazes over a Pizza Hut outlet!) but you should defi nitely taste some of the local specialities too. Try ‘mezza’ (a selection of small salads) as a starter with grilled lamb or chicken kebabs or minced lamb ‘kofta’ to follow. Puddings are sweet, delicious and full of energy to power you through your next adventure.
