YLW NEWS FACELIFT MUSCLE FOR CHARITY RUNWAY

After 26 years of wear and tear YLW’s runway will receive some much needed repaving this summer. Without affecting any commercial flights, the runway will be closed to all aviation traffic between 11pm and 5:30 am June 4 – August 24 to allow for repaving of 7300 feet of the actual 8900 feet of runway (the 2008 addition of 1600 feet will be unaffected). This late night heavy equipment work may have some impact on area residents who are light sleepers and who may sleep with their windows open. All works for this project are obliged to follow WorkSafe BC standards so the ‘beep beep beep’ of backing vehicles may be heard. Provincial environmental emissions regulations are also adhered to. The airport always tries to be a good neighbour and has notified its area residents of the project and kept them informed of the timelines. The last rehabilitation of the runway occurred in 1986.

HOT SUN EVENT SATURDAY 

This event promotes YLW’s winter flight schedule to sunny destinations, provides travel information and advice to travellers and showcases the airport’s airline and other travel partners. In addition to the information and entertainment, expect to see some vacation giveaways!

The Third Annual United Way Plane Pull Challenge, hosted by Kelowna Flightcraft at YLW on May 11, raised over $43,000 for United Way.

The unique fundraiser attracted 33 teams who attempted to pull a 32,000 lb Convair aircraft 20 feet in the fastest time possible. While some teams had the system of teamwork and brawn down to a science, others saw time and the aircraft pass a little more slowly.

The Kelowna Flightcraft team recorded the best time, with just 9.29 seconds – one might think they’ve done this before. The PCL Highrisers were a close second with a time of 9.88 seconds. The Best Team Spirit award was given to Grant Thornton’s ‘Nice Assets’, and the most funds raised by a team was awarded to Interior Savings who together raised over $3000.

One thing for certain, between the beautiful weather, hot dogs grilling on the BBQ and the camaraderie of the teams and spectators, it was another great community event.
