Go! Pop! Bang! RYE RYE Go! Pop! Bang! just released on May 15 by hip-hop

artist Rye Rye, who is a musical tornado of energy. Rye Rye is simply amazing to hear and in my book, not since Missy Elliott has a performer combined such skill in innovative rap, pop and club beats. She really surprises on her debut CD and is the perfect steam blower for a summer party jam. Joined on Go! Pop! Bang! are other talents such

as Akon, Robyn, M.I.A. and Porcelain Black, and you can’t help but jump to the grooves on songs such as “DNA” or “Crazy B…H.” Although her lyrics are at times explicit, somehow she comes off sleek and stylish with the speed and exuberance of it all.

A Joyful Noise GOSSIP For a touch of tough with the blending of a Kate

Bush or Stevie Nicks sensibility, Gossip’s fifth CD released on May 22, A Joyful Noise hits the mark. Lead vocalist Beth Ditto said that she spent the whole last year listening to nothing but ABBA and no radio… serious. Taking this to heart, Gossip has created a unique and realistic expose of new material for A Joyful Noise. Songs such as “Get A Job” or “Move in the Right

Direction” strike out with a combo of both punk vibes and disco. While “Casualties of War” and “Into the Wild” explore the sadder side of love. Although the CD cover is somewhat disturbing, the music pre- sented inside is intellectually provocative, well done and emotionally stimulating on all accounts.

Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston Sally Bowles says, “Divinely decadent” in the 1972

film Cabaret. This same comment could be just one expression used to describe Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston. An esteemed designer of the fashion industry, Roy Halston had his own share of demons. Archival footage and new interviews with Liza Min- nelli, Angelica Huston, Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley and other important people in his circle, including Diane Von Furstenberg and Billy Joel, share his story. The documentary traces the rise and ultimate demise of this master of design, innovative for the times. Also included is an interview with director Whitney

Sudler-Smith and a GQ interview. It has it all...1970s glamour, Studio 54, Andy Warhol and the first era of AIDS are revealed in this DVD of a fashion icon released May 28.

GCB (Good Christian B*tches) The religious right is seriously and twisted wrong

in this parody of good ol’ Christian values in GCB. Down South in Texas, you hear? Kristin Chenoweth sheds her “Glinda” good will and as the season pro- gresses, turns into “The Wicked Witch” of the South. While Leslie Bibb gets a strong dose of what is right and wrong in her life. The hit smash on ABC Network ran like a hound dog of clever success and now… you can tune in on your own time and watch the full first season. With a good helping of bonus features included,

such as on-set interviews, a tour of the locations used in GCB, a blooper reel, deleted scenes and an audio commentary, GCB is living large in Texas-style por- tions on DVD, out June 12.

DUSTIN LANCE BLACK With an all-star cast, 8 hits audio books June 1.

Based on the trial to overturn Proposition 8 and written by Dustin Lance Black, the play utilizes actual court transcripts, courtroom observations and interviews conducted with those involved at the time. Notable actors such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Jamie Lee Curtis, Christine Lahti and several other top-rate performers bring alive the turbulent fight to allow gay and lesbian marriage in the case of Perry vs. Brown. While we march in to the season of Pride, this landmark performance released in commemoration of Gay Pride month, is not only a reminder of where we stand as LGBTQ individuals, but one that is funda- mental to learn in the fight yet to be won.

Amy, My Daughter MITCH WINEHOUSE A loving father pays tribute and shares his own

recollections of his joyously talented yet ultimately heartbreaking daughter, Amy Winehouse, in Amy, My Daughter, set for release on June 26. It’s hard to believe that the music icon has been gone less than a year. Mitch Winehouse presents a very honest and poignant account of a father who was not only “Dad” but a seriously close confidant of the remarkable and gifted singer. Amy, My Daughter is a must-read for anyone who

was inspired and touched by her talent, personality and voice. Mr. Winehouse sets the record straight on the rumors, her addictions, the back stories of her music and most importantly the love and friendship he shared with the tragic yet brilliant woman who was Amy Winehouse.
