April Ruzycki
After spending a week and a half in Manaus, Brazil giving free chiropractic clinics, April Ruzycki knew she was in the right profession.
“It was heartwarming and heart wrenching to see these people,” says April of her 2007 university trip. “There were people who travelled for days to come to the clinic and then waited for hours to get an adjustment. That truly showed me the power of chiropractic.”
April, 31, is a graduate of Davenport Iowa’s Palmer College of Chiropractic and currently works at Medicine Hat’s Power and Jans Chiropractic clinic.
One of her favorite quotes is from F. W. Simerson who said: “What I do today is important because I’m exchanging a day of my life for it.” And that means that April loves what she’s doing right now. “I just try to fulfill every day to its full potential,” says April, who likes to cycle and travel.
When she’s not with her patients, you’ll find this Lamont, AB native volunteering. She’s a member of the Sunrise
Rotary Club and the Advisory Committee on Disability Issues, and is on the committee for International Day of Persons with Disabilities. April is also a member of the Canadian Pro Rodeo Sport Medicine Team – meaning you may catch a glimpse of her adjusting rodeo athletes at big events.
“What I give, I get back ten-fold,” says April of her volunteer gigs. “To know that you’ve given someone a voice just feels good.”
April has focused on the Activator Methods technique – which means that instead of manually manipulating patients, a small device is used that is considered low-force. “You don’t hear cracking or popping,” explains April who has worked at Power and Jans since 2008 and has earned her Advanced Proficiency Rating with the Activator Method. “Our patients really love it.”
And for April, it’s all about the overall wellness of her patients. She’ll often refer her patients to different doctors or specialists – whether it’s naturopaths or medical doctors. “One person can’t know everything,” she says.
