Jolaine Rayner
Decked out in cool cowboy boots, cutoff jean shorts and a sleeveless top, Jolaine Raynor looks like she should be in front of a camera. Not behind one.
“I was always the kid running around with a camera,” says 29-year-old Jolaine from her downtown photography studio. “For me, it’s all about creating something in a frame.”
Jolaine is the brains behind Epic Photography. She specializes in boudoir photography – and when you step into her studio, you’re taken back in time. Victorian-era sofas, jewelry and hats fill the spacious room. There are also the lighting props and a cool pink-striped wall.
For the uninitiated, boudoir photography is about creating classy images that are meant to be soft, romantic, sexy, sensual – and maybe even a bit naughty. Nudity is more often implied than explicit.
“Every single day, I get to make women feel beautiful,” says Jolaine, her long blond locks pulled into a cool braid. “It’s about making women feel comfortable in their skin.”
The message here is simple. You don’t have to be model-like to have boudoir photos taken.
Says Jolaine: “The main focus of a boudoir photographer should be to capture the client in the most flattering way by guiding them through poses that complement their body type.”
But it’s not as though Jolaine had her sights set on boudoir photography from the start.
“I started doing fitness shots and that just evolved,” she laughs. “People just started wearing less and less clothing.”
Jolaine is the first to admit that her clients are certainly stepping out of their comfort zone during a shoot. But this laid-back and chatty born-and-raised Hatter knows all about making women feel comfortable. Before every shoot, Jolaine sits down with the client and has a consultation about what they are looking to get out of the photo shoot. Then she plans the session based on that.
“Sure I like to push the creative limits but I never cross the line,” she explains. “This is all about letting people explore their own comfort zones. Within 10 or 15 minutes, most women are like rock stars in front of that camera.”
And when she’s not taking photos – she also does wedding

and family photography – you’ll find Jolaine exploring Medicine Hat looking for that next great backdrop. “My boyfriend knows that I like to go walking down dark alleys at night,” she laughs.
