Lyndon Heidinger
It’s 2 p.m. on a cloudy spring day and Lyndon Heidinger is running a bit behind. He’s spent all day in court and comes rushing into his old- house-converted-to- cool-office and quickly hands over some paper work and direction to his assistant.
“If I’m not super busy, it doesn’t feel right,” says Lyndon, one of Medicine Hat’s premier defence attorneys who has worked at Yarshenko & Co since 2008.
So things must feel pretty good right now.

Lyndon defends clients all over southern Alberta and Saskatchewan and has carved a niche with his knack for impaired driving
defence. Robbery, assault, manslaughter, homicide and drug deals are also on his list of defences. “I’m in court every day and I love what I’m doing,” says the 35- year-old, who graduated from law school in 2005.
As a guy who is used to thinking on his feet every day in court, he knows the next question is coming: Is it tough to defend people who are accused of some
pretty terrible crimes?
“When you look at the rule of the law, everybody has the right to a defence,” says Lyndon who first pursued a career in education before turning his sights to law. “It’s about the fundamentals of justice and everybody has their job.”
And when you’re defending alleged criminals, your day doesn’t end at 5 pm. “It’s a 24-hour a day job,” says this new father, adding that he never turns off his cell phone and just recently took a call from a client at 1:45 am. “That’s what I signed up for.”
But don’t be mistaken. Lyndon is hardly the hard-hearted defense lawyer you see on television.
He dedicates a portion of his practice to defending clients through legal aid and volunteers a lot of his time as the vice-president of the Medicine Hat Maverick Sports Society – which does fundraising for the baseball club and promotes the development of the sport here in Medicine Hat. “I really appreciate the opportunity to give something back,” says Lyndon, dressed sharply in a pinstripe suit, complete with bright red tie and matching red socks.
Lyndon’s favourite part of his job is that he gets to learn something new every day – from his clients and from being in court. “Every person has their own unique story to tell and I learn from that,” he says. “I’m always working to be a better lawyer and that means that you have to learn from every situation.”
