Thompson Family

Walking into the Thompson’s Crescent Heights home, you don’t get too far without being greeted by the hum of technology. Whether it’s the laptop perched in the living room, or the five different Smart phones that neatly line a wall in the kitchen, this is a household that’s connected. Like really connected.

“On a typical day, you’ll find us sitting at the table each with a laptop or phone,” laughs Jeremy, a two-term Medicine Hat alderman and former star with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

And if you’re talking politics in Medicine Hat, the conversation can’t go too far without mention of the Thompsons – Jeremy, his wife Jennifer and their three kids.

Jennifer works full-time at the Medicine Hat College as a communications officer. She’s also been Jeremy’s campaign manager for both municipal elections and served as the manager for Progressive Conservative (PC) candidate Darren Hirsch’s recent campaign. Besides being an alderman, Jeremy is also a territory sales manager for Exterran, a member of the Police Commission and President of the Cypress-Medicine Hat PC Constituency board. Both Jennifer and Jeremy have very active Twitter and Facebook accounts, and their kids are all involved in hockey, soccer and golf.

So just how do they manage it all? “Bring the kids,” says Jennifer, who hails from Washington and met Jeremy while he

Adds Jeremy: “We could literally be at an event every night, so a lot of times, we bring them. That’s how we get the kids involved.”

And it’s working.

Six-year-old Aedan was recently on the PC campaign trail in Airdrie trying to get his cousin to take down an opposing party sign. All the kids had ice cream with Premier Alison Redford and 11-year- old Faith had a meeting with the Minister of Education.

Faith came home from school and was complaining about the way they teach Math, so Jennifer and Jeremy set up a meeting with the Minister of Education where Faith could tell him what the issues were. “You can’t complain about something unless you’re willing to help

change it,” says Jennifer.

And in the Thompson household, those are words to live by. “We really want our kids to know that even at their age, they can make an impact,” Jeremy says.

So it’s not surprising that the Thompson kids have some lofty goals. “I want to be President of the United States,” says Faith. “Or an astronaut.”
