Matt Solberg

Even as a young boy, Matt Solberg knew a thing or two about making money.

“Whenever I cleaned my room, I convinced my parents to pay me for it,” laughs Matt, a financial planner at TD Waterhouse.

Now Matt spends his days making money work for other people. He is a financial planner with TD Waterhouse and when he first landed the gig back in 2007, Matt just happened to be one of the youngest financial planners in all of TD Canada.

“I love supporting my clients and growing with them,” says 29- year-old Matt.

But Matt didn’t always long to help people

with their financial plans. In fact, his first passion was computers. “I always loved playing with computers and probably got my first computer when I was in Kindergarten,” says this married father of two little kids.

After graduating from St. Michael’s High School in Bow Island, Matt headed off to DeVry in Calgary. But he soon realized that computer programming was not

something he wanted to do as a career. “I need to interact with people,” he says. “I want to be a suit-and-tie kind of guy.”

And that he is. Decked out in a sweater and funky tie, Matt is now living his dream.

On a typical day, he’s checking emails by 7:30 a.m. at home, in the office around 8:30, doing trades and meeting with his clients. He also admits to checking the stock markets while in bed – morning and night.

“My goal is to be with my clients long-term,” Matt says. “Helping people establish goals and making them see they can achieve them is what I love to do.”

Matt is also pretty darn good at his job. He consistently finishes in the top six per cent of TD Waterhouse financial planners.

Outside of work, he keeps busy with his family and also spends some time volunteering. He is currently working with Junior Achievement going into classrooms and talking to kids about economics, and does some volunteering with the United Way through TD.

As a certified financial planner, Matt is also always taking courses, reading books and just staying on top of the complicated world of finance. “The more you learn the more you realize you don’t know,” he says.

But one thing he knows for sure is that he’s in the right career. “I’ll be in this industry for the rest of my life,” he says.

With a TD Waterhouse Financial Planner, you get custom tailored fi nancial advice to help you plan for your future.
