Cameron Kemp

As a kid, Cameron Kemp would plunk himself down in front the television and channel surf until he found either L.A. Law or Law & Order. This born and raised Hatter loved watching the lawyers duke it out in the courtroom. Cameron knew he was going to be a criminal lawyer.

And he was half right.

Today, Cameron has his own successful law firm, specializing in family law, real estate, estate planning and business law. “Criminal law just wasn’t for me,” says the 33-year-old from his roomy office just off Medicine Hat’s main drag of Dunmore Road. “I did practice it but I found that it was hard to balance other work when you had to be in criminal court every day.”

After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2003, Cameron made the move back to his home town. “The longer I was in university, the more I knew I was coming back here,” he says. “I love living here. There is so much to get involved with.”

A chat with Cameron doesn’t go too far before he mentions

what is clearly his passion – volunteering his time with the local Kinsmen Club. Since 2005, Cameron has been involved with the local service club and was just recently named club president for the 2012/2013 year. Without much prompting, Cameron will quickly tell you the history of the club, and easily rattles off the events and fundraising the Kinsmen do.

“The Kinsmen are all about serving the community,” he says. “We’re raising money to help build things that will be here for the rest of my life.”

This Medicine Hat High grad spends a lot of his spare time volunteering with the club – everything from selling tickets for the annual Home Lotto, to working the booth at the Stampede to organizing fundraising events like the Skate-a-thon. “When you join an organization like the Kinsmen, you learn a lot about running a project,” says Cameron, whose long-term goal is to become a judge.

The balancing act of running your own law firm, being heavily involved in a volunteer group and being married is something that Cameron – who is also a trained mediator –

seems to have mastered. “Sure I could be at the office 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” he says. “There’s always something to do. But I love doing it all so it works out – and I have a very supportive wife.”
