Crystal Metz

Crystal Metz defines her life in two stages – pre-2008 and post- 2008. Which can only mean one thing – the year 2008 was a big one for this business owner.

Four years ago, Crystal made the bold move of selling her local Century 21 Real Estate franchise and then quickly purchasing the State Farm Insurance business here in Medicine Hat.

“That year was complete insanity,” laughs Crystal from her State Farm Insurance office. “To be honest, I had never really thought about owning an insurance business before. It happened quickly and when I look back on it now, I guess I just didn’t have time to think it over.”

It’s a good thing she didn’t.

After living in Toronto for seven months where she went through a grueling training and certification process, Crystal has a business that is both thriving and growing. She has three staff and hopes to add three more account representatives over the next three years.

Besides offering insurance coverage for auto, life, home, health, and more, State Farm also offers financial services. State Farm Canada – which operates through certified

agents like Crystal – is the fourth largest auto insurer in Canada and our country’s eighth largest property insurer.

And this married mother of two has only two ingredients in her recipe for success – transparency and respect. “We have regular meetings and I tell my staff how much it costs to keep our office going and then how much we need to make,” says the 30-year-old who hails from Kindersley, Sask. “There are no secrets here.”

Her team receives incentives for meeting and exceeding goals – and Crystal likes nothing better than to see everyone smashing their goals. “There’s a glass ceiling here for them to break every year,” she says.

Each staff member also has access to an education fund which they can use for whatever they want – whether it’s something related to the insurance business or not. “I have a huge amount of respect for every single one of my employees,” Crystal says. “And anytime they can learn something, it’s a good thing.”

And while the insanity of 2008 may be behind her, this entrepreneur shows no signs of

slowing down. Crystal likes to dabble in art and travel. She’s also collecting toys for an annual toy run and wants to start volunteering for the local SPCA.

“Every day there is something new and I love that,” she says.
