HIGH PROFILE
of your operation, like your logistics? You’ve already invested in the technology, why not optimise the routings of logs to the mill and minimise time on the road to reduce petrol and transportation costs? We have a long way to go in educating our customers on how they can get the most out of our technology. And of course given the financial stress the industry is under, organisations don’t have the capacity to track our latest technological achievements, so many foresters are unaware that there may be a better way of doing things. That’s where I’m able to come in and show clients how they can save a lot of time and learn new ways to solve today’s forest management challenges.
Esri has been around since 1969 – and we have learned that the most important objective is to make sure our customers maximise the return on their GIS investment. So we continue to be innovative, and to develop tools and solutions that make GIS even easier to use.
IFI: Are you a big traveller with Esri? PE: : I’m on the road 40-50% of the time. And that’s global. Each year I will typically visit every continent.
IFI: Have you got a favourite airport? PE: That’s an insightful question – I could write a book about the airports, hotels and convention centres of the world but the many
number countries that I’ve visited, not so much. My favourite airport is Vancouver International – it’s spectacular. They have extensive collections of amazing Pacific Northwest Coast Native art, huge wooden sculptures and totem poles. There are even small galleries with a flowing river, the sound of birds and dramatic lighting – so they’ve done an outstanding job with that airport.
IFI: And your least favourite airport? PE: Anywhere that loses my luggage.
IFI: When do you manage a holiday? PE: My family travels a lot. Our relatives live in Canada so we visit
once or twice a year. Because of my extensive work related travel, I typically don’t like big trips. Last year we went skiing in Whistler but those types of vacations are a rarity. My preference is to stay at home with my family. Especially living in Southern California, there’s so much to do. Recently we went up to Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks and before that we were in San Francisco. So there’s a lot you can do here without flying. The Grand Canyon is only six hours away. Because I travel so much with work, travelling is not a high priority when I am on vacation. Does a postal worker go for a walk after work? IFI
