LIFTING & LOADING – TECHNOLOGY REVIEW Heavy lifter

HSP Gripen develops, manufactures and markets hydraulic grapples for materials handling equipment under the brand and product name Gripen, with forest transport on forwarders and trucks, as well as the handling of large volumes at ports and timber terminals, chief recipients of such technology. Gripen is expanding and registered a record

year in 2011 – the previous record levels in 2007 were erased in both sales and the number of delivered grapples. During the year, an equipment investment of SEK11 million was

COMPANY SNAPSHOT “The organisation has also been

strengthened in the expansion and three new employees have already taken their places in the growing group in 2012. Fredrik Bergstrom has joined the sales team and comes from a position as Business Manager for Soderhamn Eriksson’s German aftermarket company, where he worked for 10 years. Fredrik, with solid sales experience in the European market, of which the last three years were spent as dealer for HSP Gripen, will be a great asset in our continued investment in continental Europe.

executed and delivered into operation. In addition, brand new CNC machinery became operational in late 2011 and has created conditions to double the production. “That was an absolute necessity,” HSP Gripen Chief Executive Tomas Jonsson said. “We have for several years lived with capacity constraints and had to turn down orders. With last year’s investment, we have secured for future demand increases. “The recent upgrades will do for at least the

next three years, but then it’s not unlikely that the company will hit capacity limits again if the increase in business continues at the same rate as in 2010/11. From there, we’ll have to build a new workshop that is optimised for production of Gripen grapples but is also prepared for other manufacturing. Exactly what this extra manufacturing capacity will target is not yet for public consumption,” Jonsson said with a smile.

A technical breakthrough in new hose swivel Indexator’s hose swivels are designed for modern hydraulic systems. The risk of twisted hoses is eliminated when using a hose swivel correctly, which obviously increases the lifetime of the hose. The classic swivel program will be complemented with a technical breakthrough, that will be launched in spring this year.

The new patent pending swivel, which is called

Fredrik will gradually take over responsibility from the Sales Marketing Manager, who will focus on continued expansion and new markets.

“Elizabeth Gonzalez Contreras has been

hired as Marketing Coordinator, a role that parallels her training on the ITM Worldwide Foundation where she ran market analysis for the company. She will take on a very similar role with Gripen in a bid to establish new, distant markets. “Even in the welding department there have been improvements, where a new robot operator has been employed. A new larger robot is in operation and also here the capacity is doubled. Production is at full pace and, provided there are no further setbacks in the global economy, our goal of increasing turnover by a further 15% in 2012 is still well and truly in sight.

‘Indexator Balance’ (IB), is hydraulically balanced with a new level of functionality and durability. The hose swivel has high quality and long life. The new design, without ball bearings, makes it impossible to pull the swivel apart during operation. “We at Indexator have managed to produce a unique product,” Bålfors said. “It is a new technical solution, it is cost effective, it has high usability and security, which results in longer life – all this wrapped in the IB swivel.” Indexator’s hose swivels are

of very high quality. They are compact, robust and tight. The swivels rotate under high pressure and are designed for

high oil flows. They minimise pressure drop and they don´t cause any extra frictional heat. Wear is eliminated because of the swivel’s unlimited rotation, which substantially extends the lifetime of the hose – twists and turns of only a few degrees can shorten the lifetime of the hose up to 90%. Another advantage is that the swivel makes it possible to use shorter hoses, which makes for smooth and flexible drawing of the hoses. “The reality facing the

industry today shows what’s needed and brings new ideas – we make them happen,” Bålfors concluded. IFI
