SAW TECHNOLOGY – OPERATION FOCUS

The Woodmaster C-Sharp uses high-carbon grade steel

Awesome upgrade

Lenox’s latest innovation for bandsaw users has set a new standard and the company is confident it will become a major feature of the portable sawmill marketplace

“ H

eck of a blade for the money,” was the first thing saw technology expert,

Frank Curran said when asked about Lenox’s latest entrant into the bandsaw blade market, the Woodmaster C-Sharp. That thought was rapidly followed by “cuts really good” and “everybody ought to try at least one”. Curran is the owner of a full

service saw shop in Polkton, North Carolina where he welds and distributes wood cutting blades from various manufacturers, offers knife sharpening services, and re- tips carbide circular saws. He also owns a 13HP portable mill that he used to personally test the blade along with many tests he conducted at his top customers. Curran and his customers who tested the product were extremely pleased and surprised with the blade’s performance, noting that it was easy to sharpen, left a smooth finish and could cut some of the hardest woods without any

problems. After running it on his mill, he said: “It’s hard to believe you could cut a 20.5 inch width of green cyprus like this and still get that straight of a cut.” Lenox had been manufacturing bandsaw blades for the wood cutting industry since 1995 when

applications, Lenox has struggled to become a dominant player on portable mills. “Lenox has always done well in

the re-saw market, but we have never been able to have wide- spread success in the portable market,” Daniel Fernandes,

Associate Product Manager at Lenox, told IFI. “We visited many sawyers with portable mills and they told us that the Lenox blades they used in the past were good,

but not the best. We know this is a sizable market and it has many growth opportunities. We now feel that Lenox has a blade in the Woodmaster C-Sharp that will become a staple with portable sawyers.” Portable sawyers have a demanding set of product requirements. With the Woodmaster C-Sharp, Lenox has the correct set of features to achieve optimal performance. To start with, Woodmaster C-Sharp is a ground-tooth carbon steel bandsaw blade. Grinding gives the blade an ultra-sharp tooth that has consistent tooth heights and exact tooth spacing. Joe Maiolo, Product Engineer at

Lenox, said: “When we developed this blade, we went away from the conventional process of milling the teeth into the blade because that process causes striations in the gullet that can lead to pre- mature breakage.” Precision set teeth are
