UK Paint Horse Association

Once again we have obtained funding for a USA judge from APHA and will be holding the UK PHA Summer

Championship Show within the WES National Show on 24-26 August at Moreton Morrell, Warwickshire. David Lloyd and Mick Carder are leading this year’s show team so make sure you have it in your diary.

Lita Pocock, of the fantastic new Oakridge Arena, has been very supportive to the association and in addition to PAC (Paint Alternative Competition) affiliation of the venue’s Sherwood shows, Lita has agreed to include APHA approved shows for UK PHA during the year. In early July (6-8) we will have our first ever UK PHA Breed Show within the Sherwood Summer Sizzler show. This will be double judged so there will be

double the performance and year- end points available. Rick and Maj-Britt LeMay are confirmed judges so please get this in your diary too.

Oakridge will also play host to our third full APHA approved show at its Summer Blast (31 August - 2 September). Again it will be double judged and

APHA approved. Susanne Zahner and Jan Boogaerts will be judging and, as well as APHA classes, there will be also be BR, NRHA and WES competition on offer. Finally, our very own Tracey Eaton has done a great job to arrange five shows at Brandon Riding Academy in Suffolk. The first Brandon show was in April but there are more coming up on 27 May, 24 June, 22 July and 12 August, all with great judges. Rob Painter. www.ukpha.co.uk

A large and lively crowd, including two of our Irish members, attended the AGM which, by coincidence, was held on St. Patricks Day! As well as the usual hi-point trophies awarded to competitors, a number of people received recognition for their hard work for WES over the years. Achievement Awards were presented to Mick Carder, Thea Lloyd and Margaret Kemp. Lifetime memberships were awarded to Stephanie McGrath, Ursula Holliday and Lynne Stanley, all former long-serving members of Council, and Brenda Ditchfield was presented with her lifetime membership award from 2011. The annual three day clinics in April were enjoyed by those who took part, with the only complaint being that the time went by too quickly. Many thanks to organisers

Margaret Kemp and David Hudspeth and to instructors Scherie Dermody, Michael Langford and Bruce Lawrence, who all worked so hard.

Looking ahead, plans are well underway for the National Show (24-26 August). Our main arena judge this year will be Mike Carter (USA), with Johanna Cotton and David Brindley as the outside arena judges. Mick Carder and David Lloyd are this year’s Show

Secretary and Show Manager respectively and they are planning a new schedule to try to achieve the best balance of classes across the three days. New for this year will be the Pink Pleasure charity class following the lead from AQHA UK which is holding a similar class at their September show at the suggestion of youth rider, Hayley Davies. The class is an unaffiliated class sponsored by WES Chairman David Brindley, and all riders must wear pink. An additional little challenge has been added to the WES event. For more information about this and details on how to donate to the cause please see the news item, ‘David Brindley’s Pink Pleasure Challenge,’ on the website.
