Community CLUBNEWS Devon Western Riding Club Open Youth Show

The DWRC put on an Open Youth Show at The Centre for Caring Horsemanship in Whiddon Down, Devon, in April. With WES judge Judith Hubbard, 16 enthusiastic riders aged between 6 and 17 from the area attended. They were able to hire ponies from the Centre and owner Penny Hill was kept extremely busy not only getting the ponies ready, but changing riders and leading some. Many thanks to Penny, her

family and her fabulous team for all their help.

The ages were split into three groups: seven and under, 12 and under and 17 and under. They each competed in showmanship, western pleasure, trail and horsemanship, with proud parents and friends looking on. We wouldn’t have been able to put on this show without the support and the help from everyone at DWRC so thanks to you all.

Congratulations to our hi-point

winners. The seven years and under went to Finley Doyle, the 12 years and under and best turned out went to Maddie Darke, and the 17 years and under to

Molly Rochester. Judges awards of custom show shirts went to William Barnes and Jessica Dennis. Sarah Davies / www.dwrc.co.uk

Fallowbrook Western Riding Club, Kent Easter Fun Show

Following the enormous success of the Christmas Fun Show, Kent-based Fallowbrook organised a similar event at Bodiam International Arena for the weekend after Easter. Popular western riding coach Susie Anderson agreed to judge for the day and Vicky Burger acted as her scribe. The day began with a strong showmanship class won by the ever elegant Joanne Gallagher. There followed western pleasure, horsemanship and trail, all with a walk-jog only section for those members who were less confident in the show pen. Cheryl Foreman took away a clutch of blue ribbons on this her first outing for over a year following the birth of her baby girl. Nina Blacket also went home smiling after riding her horse Pep in a

show class for the first time.

As always, the emphasis was on having fun with your horse and the Egg and Spoon race certainly provided that! There were a few dubious techniques employed and one team decided to eat their egg instead. At lunchtime, we held a raffle with Angie Crofts of Open Range Western Supplies putting up a £60 voucher as first prize.

The most memorable moment must have been the Easter Bonnet Championship. Members had gone to great lengths to produce bonnets of all shapes and sizes, complete with chickens, feathers and eggs. However, the arrival of the last competitor caused uproar as Tina Rogan had dressed herself and her horse up as the Easter Bunny! At the end of a busy day every rider went home with an Easter egg and a big smile. Pauline Brimson / chloe276@aol.com
