BEFORE YOU START To make this gate manoeuvre look easy and effortless you do need to practise the basics with your horse. Before you start check that your horse can:
Back up step by step Side pass softly and slowly Wait patiently for your commands Respond to the slightest request
As I mentioned before, when done correctly this obstacle looks really easy. If you think it looks simple, why not try it for yourself? You just might find that your basics aren’t as great as you think.
STEP 1
Place your horse on the left hand side of the gate where you can reach the latch easily. The latch should be closest to you and the hinge furthest away. If you have to reach for the latch you may find that you accidently use your right leg to balance yourself which then pushes the horse away from the obstacle. This will make your horse swing his hindquarters away. If this happens, just stop and start again.
STEP 2
So you’ve placed your right hand on the gate. Unlatch it and start to slide your hand along the bar of the gate or, if you have a rope gate, keep it in your hand. You now have to walk your horse forward a few paces to give you enough space to allow your horse to move his rear end through. Push the gate away from you and move
your horse’s quarters to the right through the gate.
