Welcome

In a time when money is tight many western riders are choosing to go it alone rather than employ the services of a trainer. Some may also be of a standard where they choose to maintain their horse themselves or they may just fancy the challenge and reward of knowing they have achieved things on their own rather than with professional help. Whatever the reasoning there is plenty in this issue for the DIY western rider to get their teeth stuck into, and coach Linda Durocher starts us off with a psychological assessment of what it means to be trainerless (page 20).

I am sure you’ll all agree however that if everything goes wrong it is good to know that we have access to some very talented UK trainers and coaches who can get us back on track. If you ever need help remember that most of them are on the WHUK Map (page 56) and are just a phone call away.

This edition celebrates more than any the depth of knowledge and experience the WHUK team of contributing experts has. You’ll find words of wisdom on reining, trail and general horsemanship, both in the arena and out in the wilderness. We also start off a new series

detailing what to do in the case of an extreme behavioural problem. Trainers play a vital role in producing those sacred beasts known as ‘the finished horse.’ If you are lucky enough to have such a horse you’ll know what I mean! Finding them can be tricky but we have responded to feedback from readers who wanted to see more finished horses in the classifieds and teamed up with PK Performance Horse Sales to bring you a selection of proven reining, pleasure and all around show horses to suit all budgets (page 62).

If you do choose to do all the hard work at home yourself then there’s nothing like a little retail motivation to help you reach your goals. Our new Western Boutique (page 58) feature will whet your appetite for when you want to treat yourself for a job well done.
