BRITISH REINING

Francesca Sternberg topped the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Intermediate Non Pro in April riding Smart Like Valentino. The five year old Quarter Horse gelding is by Smart Like Juice out of Smart Little Jewel and the pair scored a scorching 223.5 to claim the Intermediate Non Pro title and $13,106. They also qualified for the Non Pro finals, and finished in fifth place, taking an additional $13,547, a saddle sponsored by Kyle Tack, a Gist Silversmiths buckle, Rios of Mercedes boots and a Catena watch.

Francesca said of her win, ‘I have told all my friends and family that success is where preparation meets opportunity. I had the opportunity, and they did all the preparation! Steffano Massignan got the horse ready for me, my sister [Rosanne Sternberg] gave me a wonderful opportunity, and the Sterling Ranch crew here was unbelievable.’ She added, ‘You can’t do this on your own. You have to have the right team behind you and the right horse under you – both are hard to find.’

Francesca went on to win a further three classes, including the prestigious NRBC Non Pro Challenge aboard her sister's horse Shiners Chic. The seven year old gelding had previously been successful with Francesca's niece Jessica Sternberg. The ride became available as Jessica is currently taking her finals exams at The Royal Holloway University.

Francesca has now won more than $250,000 in reining competitions world wide, making her the highest earning British Reining rider to date. She is part of the Sterling Quarter Horse team based at Bodiam, East Sussex, and has represented Great Britain at the last three World Equestrian Games. Francesca joked that she has had to improve her performance recently to keep up with her husband Doug Allen, last year's Intermediate Open Reserve Word Champion and daughter Tabitha, last year's AQHA International Rookie of the Year. ‘The heat is on!' she joked.

The BR Council wish to thank all those who gave their time and put in so much effort to ensure the smooth running of the BR Spring show. Peter Lane and Jennifer Sheerin spent both days working at the gate as well as

presenting rosettes and plaques. Jennifer was also posting live scoring via Facebook throughout the show. NRHA Judge Adam Heaton assisted by doing the ‘Bit and Tail’ checks as is required by NRHA and saved hours of valuable time over each of the two days.
