POLYCORE TUBULAR LININGS Carrie Kelly

As horizontal drilling continues to rise dramatically, so does the need for a product that prevents leaks from sprouting and keeps the well operational.

Whenever there is a deviation in a rod pumping oil well direction, the rod can cause excessive wear on the rod. Rather than dealing with that every day, many operators are instead eliminating the problem with Polycore thermoplastic liners.

“The increase in horizontal drilling is the single biggest reason for growth in our business,” says Dennis Carmichael, managing director of Polycore Tubular Linings Corporation.

The company, which has an office in Calgary and an assembly plant in Bow Island, has 50 employees and is continuing to grow.

“We have products that are designed to solve problems and save money — problems that every oil producer has on a daily basis, such as rod on tubing wear and corrosion,” Carmichael says.

Polycore is bringing those products to the Southern Alberta Petroleum Show in Medicine Hat May 7 to 9.

If a hole is worn through the tubing, the operator has a leak, which translates into lost production and lost money.

“Our thermoplastic liners are designed to eliminate the need for service jobs,” explains Carmichael.

The thermoplastic liners are wear resistant and chemically inert, eliminating concerns associated with the rods that stroke up and down in beam pump or PC pumping wells, wireline damage, coil tubing mechanical damage, acid treatments and chemical treatments. They also eliminate the need for corrosion inhibitors.

Some of Polycore’s liners are specifically designed to limit permeability of acid gases such as CO2 and H2S and can withstand temperatures of up to 260 C.

The liners are simple to install and work with all types of acidizing fluids, showing virtually no sign of wear to jointed rods.

Polycore’s sister company in the US, Western Falcon, developed the thermoplastic lined tubing technology more than 20 years ago. Thermoplastic liners have a proven track record in down-hole applications for almost 20 years, and the need for them is spiking as horizontal drilling increases.

The liners can be installed in both new and inspected refurbished tubing.

”Using refurbished tubing makes a lot of sense economically,” says Carmichael.

Polycore purchases used tubing, refurbishes it and makes it available for others.
