A business built from the ground up

CARRIE KELLY

Father and son Ferron and Tyrel Kenmore created their own business from the ground up using innovative methods and determination to get others to believe in them as much as they did themselves.

With a limited research and development budget initially in 2006, Kenmore Holdings managed to develop an alternative disposal option for natural gas production solids, including swabbing and coil tubing mud.

“I had a bit of a brainwave while on the centrifuge,” says Tyrel. “I thought since the chemicals were doing the work, maybe we could eliminate a piece of equipment.”

Through a unique blend of mechanical and chemical technology, Kenmore Holdings processes directly in the field.

“We developed all of our processes around the environment and saving money for companies,” he says.

Kenmore Holdings processes production mud from shallow gas right on site, eliminating the need for a vacuum truck.

“We use specialized pumps and do the process inside of the truck. As it’s pumping, it’s also processing,” Tyrel explains.

The method is considered an environmentally friendly choice for the disposal of slurries since processing in field and utilizing a lightweight aluminum trailer allows for bigger payloads, eliminating the need to double haul wastes. Energy requirements are a fraction of traditional disposal methods.

But to find out if their method really was superior, Kenmore Holdings needed to put it to the test in the field.

“Petro-Canada really gave us a shot to try something,” says Tyrel.

In 2007, Petro-Canada gave Kenmore Holdings the opportunity to work at one of its collection facilities to continue to develop and hone their processes.

Petro-Canada only paid for solids that were disposed of, allowing Kenmore Holdings enough time to perfect their process without running up a large cost back to Petro-Canada.

Seven different ways of in-field solidification were developed during that period.

While that time period was a huge breakthrough for the start up company, research and development will never stop, Tyrel says.

Kenmore Holdings invests in research and development to continue to expand and eliminate environmental liabilities. They are focused on developing solutions for in-field heavy oil upgrading, municipal slurry solidifications, on-site hydro vac solidification, oil recovery from tank bottoms, bitumen tailings reduction and elimination.

And even though the price of gas has remained low, Kenmore Holdings had its biggest year this past one as more companies are hearing about them and hiring them.

The success the company is seeing is rewarding, Tyrel says, just as it is rewarding to be able to share in that success with his father.

“It has been the greatest experience of my life to work with my father,” he says. “I’d like to see my son out there with me one day.”

State-of-the-art laser scanning technology analyzes external pipeline corrosion

CARRIE KELLY

As pipelines continue to age, companies are looking for solutions to prevent pipeline failure and minimize any potential for leaks.

Laser scanning is quickly becoming the standard for assessing and correlating corrosion and Calgary based IPL Technologies (formerly Smartpipe Technologies) is one of two companies in the world offering this technology.

The IPL LaserSCAN3D uses state-of-the-art laser scanning technology combined with high powered software to capture and analyze external corrosion on pipelines. A big advantage of using a laser is the high resolution provided along with completely verifiable results in a fraction of the time required for manual methods.

IPL’s laser can be mounted on pipe of any diameter larger than three inches. Four magnetic wheels allow it to roll 360 degrees around the pipe to capture a three-dimensional scan. The data is then represented in visual reports showing the exact size and location of all ‘as found’ features.

The method creates a permanent database of every feature examined, allowing historical scans to be used as a baseline for
