comparing with In Line Inspection (ILI) data.

“It really is more reliable and accurate than manual inspections,” says Tom Taylor, Vice President of Sales and Support for IPL Technologies.

The technology can be used to help model the growth of corrosion and provide high resolution digital imaging, enabling better decisions. Since the laser can scan an entire area, rather than one small part, it can provide more precise information for making integrity projections.

The software not only captures the data, it analyzes it, providing burst pressure calculations using industry standard formulas and correlation to ILI data.

“By providing the most accurate means to validate ILI results, it allows companies to focus their energy on areas of greatest risk and ultimately optimize where their digs are targeted,” says Taylor.

At a time when pipeline operators are being required to increase the level of integrity to ensure public safety and address environmental protection, a tool that saves time while increasing confidence has been received with open arms.

“We started working on this technology all the way back in 2004 when we realized that companies were doing more and more corrosion digs as their pipes got older,” says Darren Hill, CEO of IPL Technologies. “We launched the commercial version last year and it couldn’t have been better timing. With the entire industry scrambling to find solutions in response to the recent high profile failures, we are seeing a lot of interest.”

IPL, which has deep roots in pipeline technology, was founded by Calgarian Gerry Hill who started in the industry more than 50 years ago. His sons have been the driving force behind the development of the world class technology the company now offers.

In addition to doing assessments, IPL Technologies is providing the tools and training so companies can do the pipeline integrity work themselves.

“We are making the technology available to other service companies and training their technicians to use the technology,” Taylor says.

IPL Technologies brought on a new president to help guide the company through its new growth phase shifting from a more services oriented company to a greater focus on delivering its new technology.

Dave Fior joined the company in January having guided a number of businesses from early stage businesses to larger scale companies with broad international reach.

Fior is excited about the prospects for IPL Technologies.

“The team at IPL Technologies has developed a world class technology backed up by a team of industry veterans. With a number of key pipeline operators taking the lead and mandating the use of high resolution imaging for their integrity programs, the opportunity for IPL Technologies is huge,” he says.

Our technology doesn’t allow for any cutting of corners and eliminates human errors, Fior suggests.

“At a time when the politics of pipelining requires the highest levels of integrity, I am happy we can contribute in a significant way to making this a reality.”

IPL will be at the International Pipeline Exposition in Calgary this September showcasing its LaserSCAN3D technology.
