Traders urged to alert chamber of problems

EDEN Valley Chamber of Commerce is trying to set up an early warning scheme to alert members and loyalty card holders of any problems in the town.

The move follows news of a man passing off fake £50 notes in High Street shops. “What we are trying to do is develop some sort of alert,” said chamber president Peter Kingham. “We want to try and encourage traders to report things happening in the High Street and we will fire it out.”

Mr Kingham said he had looked into a more formal shop watch systems but found they required walkie talkies and additional

costs. “That is not the point,” he said. “If something happens, if there is an incident, particularly if there is a photo, then let us know and we will send it out to chamber members and loyalty card members.”

Mr Kingham said this could be anything from shoplifters to people causing trouble. Information should be sent to edenvalleychamber@gmail.com. • A total of 637 loyalty cards went into the March draw representing £38,220 spent in the town during the month. “At this rate we will need a new collecting box and a new tombola,” said Mr Kingham.

Local shop up for gift retailing industry award

SOMETHING Special in Edenbridge is proving that it is one of the greats in gift retailing.

The High Street based shop has been announced as one of the finalists in The Greats Gift Retailer Awards 2012, which recognise excellence in the gift retailing industry.

Celebrating its 10th jubilee this year, the awards are organised by Progressive Gifts & Home magazine. The winners will be announced at a special dinner to be held at the London Lancaster Hotel overlooking Hyde Park on 17 May.

This is the first time that Something Special’s gift and greetings card buyer Karen Ebers has entered the contest and was delighted that the shop was nominated for an award in the Best Retailer Initiative category. “We have never been up for The Greats before,” she said. “This is a first.” Now Karen has the task of finding a suitable ball gown to wear to the glamorous awards presentation. “I have got three daughters who have got ball dresses and will probably find something to fit,” she said.

MEMBERS of the Hazelwood School’s Chapel Choir travelled to Normandy during the last weekend of a very busy spring term. They were taking part in Hazelwood’s very first European Music Tour. After weeks of intense rehearsal, the children, parents and staff set off early on Friday morning to entertain audiences on the other side of the Channel.

It was a great experience for the children and as well as singing in the magnificent Bayeux Cathedral, the choir also gave an impromptu performance in the chapel at Mont St Michel, delighting the visiting tourists with their singing. There was time too for a spot of sight- seeing with a visit to the Normandy Beaches proving both emotional and poignant for the children, staff and parents.

Maxine Shaw, head of Hazelwood joined the touring party.

“I had the pleasure of accompanying the

choir to Normandy and as well as the impeccable singing, the children were once again an absolute delight to be with,” she said. “Well mannered, polite and excellent company, they are to be congratulated and thanked for a wonderful weekend.

“It was incredibly moving to watch the talent of such young people as they sang in the Cathedral at Bayeux, performed on flute and violin in Honfleur and perhaps most moving of all, sang Pie Jesu in the Church at Mont St Michel. I suspect the memories of the
