3 Young photographers’ work on show

TEN Edenbridge youngsters have taken a fresh look at their surroundings and ended up with a photographic exhibition at local gallery Topfoto.

Discover GO-ED – girls only education at Croydon High

CROYDON High School in Selsdon is an exceptional independent day school with a proven track record for bringing out the very best in girls from ages three to 18. Girls Only Education is nothing new of course and Croydon High has been delivering a top class learning experience to local girls since 1874. The school believes passionately in the benefits of single sex education, simply because, they say, it works. GO-ED at Croydon High is how the school describes its attitude to the education of girls. Head, Debbie Leonard explains: “We are committed to enabling our girls to discover their passions in life, be they academic, sporting, artistic or an interest that stems from participation in our vast range of extra-curricular activities. We take academic success seriously of course and our results speak for themselves. But, equally important to us, is that the girls are well rounded,

well-informed and able to express their opinions confidently.”

The school believes that the girls-only environment benefits the girls enormously. In a single sex environment, they say, there is less pressure to conform to stereotype, particularly in academic or sporting choices. Girls take all three sciences – and do well – and the level of participation, determination and success on the sports fields is something the school is particularly proud of.

Croydon High girls are inspired to aim high and to believe that with dedication and hard work anything is possible.

The school is set within a green and pleasant 14 acre site in Selsdon, close to Warlingham and well served by public transport.

The next open day is 17 May, junior school from 9.30am to 12 noon; senior school 6 to 8.30pm.

The project came about while the 10 young exhibitors were attending a youth group called The Gathering, meeting regularly at Bridges in the High Street. Last summer they were set the challenge of recording the places, people and events that caught their interest. The result was an eclectic mix of photographs recording everything from the local countryside and everyday objects to road signs and garden equipment but all viewed from an unusual perspective – hence the exhibition’s title Fresh Eye.

Carried out under the guidance of photographer and designer Paul Houlton, the project was a joint venture between the Eden Christian Trust and the YMCA. “It all started last summer,” explained Rebecca Kift. “We took photos of each other and of other things as well and it just kind of evolved. It’s quite surprising that it has got to this stage.”

The exhibition has now moved to Bridges.

A DAY full of fun is being planned to raise funds for ECHO, an organisation which supports children treated at the Evelina Children’s Hospital, predominately for congenital heart defects.

Fun day to help children’s hospital Steve received.

The family fun day on Sunday, 8 July at Crockham Hill Village Hall is being organised by Andrea Deans, whose son Ellis was born with serious heart disease and was cared for at the hospital. Little Ellis had open-heart surgery at just 10 days old and now Andrea wants to give something back in return for the help she and her husband

The event will be packed full of fun things for the children to do from games and competitions, a bouncy castle, face painting and music to music and drink. There will also be World War Two military vehicles such as ferrets, jeeps and ambulances on show. Andrea is hoping there might even be a chance for rides in the vehicles if an additional field can be sorted out. For more information about about the event, ECHO and Ellis’s story go to www.andreadeansphotography.c o.uk/echo.
