Tandridge/Edenbridge Chronicle May 2012 Edenbridge Town Council

LOTS still seems to be happening lately and Edenbridge continues to buck the trend of doom and gloom that seems to be spreading though large parts of the country and further afield.

I am very pleased to highlight the extension to the opening hours of our much loved Minor Injuries Unit at the hospital. This is for a six month trial, it is to be open seven days a

week between 8.30am and 8pm. Now, I am not advising you to deliberately injure yourself but should you need treatment please make use of the excellent services provided there. A review of the extended hours is to take place towards the end of the trial, to establish if it is a good use of the NHS trust’s limited funds. So it will be a case of use it or lose it.

Further good news is on the playground front with the official opening ceremony being arranged for the refurbishment of Park View Playground. The Town Council has promised to sponsor the ice cream van and will be offering FREE ICE CREAM whilst stocks last! The event is a fun day with something for all the family and will take place during the school summer holidays.

considering the tenders for the replacement of the play equipment in Stangrove Park. This will be aimed at under eights and a consultation is being planned to gather views from the nursery unit at the primary school, local preschools and the Children’s Centre. Two designs have been selected and the views of the children and their parents will be the decisive factor in making the final decision. The tricky process of seeking funding partners is underway and it will be exciting to watch this project come to fruition.

Three names have been short listed for the new Community Centre and residents had the opportunity to vote for their favourite at the Co-op on Saturday 28 April. The winning name will be added to the building design and be a lasting legacy on the building. Not unsurprisingly, the works have fallen slightly behind due to the deluge of rain that is doing its best to refill the reservoirs. Finally, more good news – to celebrate the Jubilee the council is replacing the clock on the Natwest Bank in the High Street.

The original clock was installed to celebrate the George V Silver Jubilee in 1935. One side of the new clock will continue to celebrate that anniversary and the other the current Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. A grant has been applied for from Sevenoaks District Council Big Community Grant members’ fund and we are keeping our fingers crossed. Two new commemorative benches are to be installed, one opposite the war memorial at the hospital, and one in Stangrove Park.

By Eden Valley Chamber of Commerce president Peter Kingham

THIS is going to be a very busy month for many people in Edenbridge, myself included. We are putting the finishing touches to plans for the Fun Day on Monday, 4 June so that we can make this a Fun Day to remember. We have people registering their cars and bikes for the Diamond Jubilee vehicle pageant and enquiries for the Pram Races after the excellent coverage we have had over the past few weeks so if you are still pondering whether or not to

be a part of a wonderful day then give us a call. We can help out with practical advice on building a competition pram and answer any questions you might have so get in touch either through the Chamber website www.Edenvalleychamber.org.uk or the festival site www.Edenvalleyfestival.org.uk for entry forms and further information.

I am happy to say that the Loyalty Card continues to go from strength to strength, the last draw winner was chosen from over 600 cards which represents nearly £40,000 spent in the town during March.

As a shopkeeper myself I get the impression that not only are people from Edenbridge supporting their town but we are seeing more and more “out of towners” visiting which is good for all of us.

Edenbridge Music and Arts Trust will be presenting its Jubilee Concert on Saturday, 12 May at Edenbridge Parish Church. Featuring the 2012 Edenbridge Sinfonia, the programme will include Dvorakʼs Symphony No.8 in G Major, Weberʼs Jubilee Overture, Parryʼs English Suite, Vaughan Williamsʼ The Lark Ascending with soloist Paula Martinez on violin (pictured left) and Elgarʼs Pomp and Circumstance March No.4. Tickets cost £15 (under 15s £2) and are available from Edenbridge Bookshop in the High Street. The concert will start at 7pm, doors open at 6.30pm.

These visitors all tell me what a lovely town Edenbridge is and when we give them some of the Town Trail maps produced by the Edenbridge Town Council they go off happily exploring. Building a reputation as a destination town will bring all sorts of benefits and those people we talk to who have moved here all reinforce the impression of a strong and happy community. I am looking forward to the two week festival as a celebration of all the good things about Edenbridge and I particularly look forward to seeing you all packing the High Street for the Pram Races and the vehicle pageant. Finally, don’t forget to look skywards on 4 June 4 and enjoy an air display by a WW2 Spitfire which has been sponsored for your enjoyment by our friends at Chic Dress Agency. Enjoy!

Thanks for amazing youth club support Letters to the editor...

AS chairperson for the Hurst Green Youth Club, I just wanted to say how grateful I was to receive a cheque for £115 from the manager and staff of Waitrose in Oxted.

It was by chance that the lead volunteer, Tara Thomas, asked if we could be considered as part of the fundraising that they do using the green tokens and we found out that we were on the list for February and a cheque was on its way to us the following month so thank you to all the Waitrose customers for your support.

I also wanted to pass my enormous thanks to management and staff at The Factory Shop in Oxted. Again our youth volunteer leader simply asked if they would like to

support the youth club in some way. They subsequently announced their full support and have so far raised a whopping £300 and this is still rising! I have been genuinely amazed and proud of the local support for our youth club, which has risen like a Phoenix, higher than any of us could have imagined.

On behalf of all the children, the volunteers and the committee members and future trustees at the youth club in Hurst Green, thank you for making the local children of Holland, Hurst Green and Oxted happy. You have helped us to provide opportunities that some children would never have appreciated. C. Lambert Singer (Mrs) c.lambertsinger@talktalk.net
