Help save lives as a community responder

Responders would like to boost the team’s numbers from the five it has at the moment to between eight and 10 volunteers. Responders attend emergency calls on behalf of the South Coast Ambulance Service and often arrive before the ambulance can get there as they are locally based. “People say they did not know this existed and probably don’t until one of us

In 20120 the Oxted district responders attended 436 emergency calls and were on call a total of 5,729 hours. The number of emergency calls attended rose to 490 in 2011, with 70% of 24/7 covered. Support for the group comes from local authorities and organisations, and the Community Foundation for Surrey. It now has enough money to buy some new defibrillators and it hopes to one day have a dedicated vehicle that can be used by all the volunteers.

Public toilets totally transformed

A FORMER public toilet in Edenbridge has been completely transformed to provide bright new office space in the town.

The tiny building sits adjacent to the

old stone bridge in the High Street and has a lovely view over the River Eden.

The new owner, local property consultant John Proctor, believes it was built sometime in the 1920s and originally provided separate facilities for men and women. The toilets were closed in the latter part of the 1990s but then in 2001 they were converted into dual sex with disabled and nappy changing facilities. The idea was for the WC to be used for walkers using paths along the river but it closed permanently after just a few years. Discussions followed about its possible future and the property was

eventually put up for auction in October 2010, and was purchased by Mr Proctor. Now the old toilets with their distinctive red brick walls and arches have been given a new lease of life with bright and airy office space, a toilet, underfloor heating, dual air conditioning and a

small kitchen complete with instant hot water for tea and coffee. Building maintenance company Resimend based in Marlpit Hill carried out the work.

“It would be an ideal small office for someone, who is maybe starting up in business,” said

Mr Proctor. “It would appeal to someone who would like some visual exposure.”

Mr Proctor added that he had very much enjoyed the unusual project. “It is the first public toilet I have done,” he said. “I passed it frequently and thought it was an opportunity.”
