Est. 2000 Tandridge CHRONICLE MAY 2012 Wildlife area will aid learning
CHILDREN from Holland Junior School have celebrated the opening of a state of the art new classroom...but this one came complete with its own bug hotel and pond. Designed with input from TV gardener Diarmuid Gavin, the school now has its own extensive wildlife area, which occupies a patch of previously disused land. It will be used as an outdoor learning space and a focus for science lessons, and is the culmination of five years of planning and fundraising by Holland School Association. The official opening was performed by head teacher Terence Sheen, who described the wildlife area as a fantastic learning resource.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to encourage children in learning,” he said. “There will be other opportunities, not just with science. It is going to add to their learning and their enjoyment of learning.” The area has a large pond with a low viewing bridge and jetty and habitats for wildlife including a hedgehog house, leaf litter, bug house, bird house, dead hedge, and meadowland grass. There is also a bird hide and sun dial.
Pupils also marked the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by planting a memorial hedge around the area, attaching copper tags recording their names.

Downs Way School in Oxted was a mass of purple when pupils took part in Purple Day for Epilepsy. The youngsters learned a lot about how to help people with the condition even though they are only small, what epilepsy is and what it does to people. Everyone wore purple to school on the day and raised £158 to support Young Epilepsy (formerly St Piers) in Lingfield and the excellent work it does for people with the condition. The school cook Mrs Clark also made everyone a cookie with purple icing to help the day along.
